My grandfather used to tell me the story of a farmer who moved into his neighbourhood from another district. This guy came over to introduce himself to my grandpa, and when he was there he asked what the neighbors were like.

My grandpa asked him what they were like where he came from.

"They were a bunch of _ssholes," replied the new neighbour.

"Well then", my grandpa responded, "you'll find them much the same here."

Now, I never really knew whether this was a true story, or just grandpa's way of teaching a valuable life lesson. It didn't matter. This was now decades ago and grandpa is long since departed. But the meaning and the reason he told the story has stuck.
