Killing the CWB...potential for lost Canadian jobs

Interesting consequence of the new shakedown in grain marketing.

Farmers are not in business to ensure Canadian jobs are secure. We have enough of our own problems. Grain will flow thru the least cost channel and that's exactly what we want.

”…the end of the Board means it’s much less likely there will be high-quality Canadian grain in Canadian-made products like these as corporate food processors go for the cheapest source – even if it happens to be grain from Ukraine that glows in the dark.”
Umm, those companies were not barred from importing cheap grain before the CWB monopsony was ended. What makes the author think they will import it now, unless they think that Canadian grain will become more expensive without the CWB monopsony. In which case, why is he supporting the CWB monopsony if it was lowering grain prices to western farmers?
Oh wait, Mr Climenhaga says why - “”...which will certainly contribute to a loss of good unionized jobs in Vancouver” Western farmers were paying extra for cushy union jobs too. How nice Mr. Climenhaga.

Thank you PM Harper for ending this tyranny.

Wilagro - It's called ... efficiency !
Something the old CWB's (single desk) wasn't concerned about, since they were the only game in town, they felt no need.
It's great to see these grain companies trying to become more efficient, so they can lower their basis to try out bid the other grain companies for our gain.
Competition is what keeps everyone working towards efficency, honesty and yes.. that dirty word the socialists don't like ...profit.

It is completely idiotic to contend that the old
wheat board should have been left intact to
preserve jobs of pseudo civil servants. Who do
you suppose was paying their handsome salaries
and benefits?

agriman, the tremendous premiums and top
price for grain the boards rec'd paid for
all those. Not farmers.

Its so easy to be a board supporter. no
proof, logic, or business sense required!
Just lies and made up stuff. So many years
i could have had it so easy.

Maybe the cwb should have been downsizing at the same rate permit book numbers were declining. Efficiency/streamlining.

Really makes you wonder. Does the cwb need gord making hundreds of thousands to be a telemarketer and leaving voice recordings on voice mail. Its seems the cwb is still top heavy in salaries.

Oh well, they will use the goverment money for a bonus/severance for ward.

About The Author

David Climenhaga is an award-winning journalist, author, post-secondary teacher, poet and trade union communicator who has worked in senior writing and editing positions at the Toronto Globe and Mail and Calgary Herald.

Its fitting for this man and his background to write such a story and a story is all it is. Many of us have not even used the CWB for many years and are doing just fine with the grain companies. And to top that off all this other grains is still moving to Canadian ports where possible.

Interesting on who grows the crop now Willy,

From Agriweek Aug 20 2012:

"A paper from the George Morris Centre concludes that there is little correlation between farm profitability and trends in farm numbers. The paper by Larry Martin and Al Mussell correlates census data with gross and net farm income to show that inadequate income is not a major factor in the trend toward larger farms.
Farms with annual sales over $500,000 represent just under 15% of all farms but almost 70% of farm-gate revenue. On average, these farms have over $5 million in annual revenue."

Thanks for the good article Morris Dorosh... Keep up the good work!

Morris also has an interesting article on how wheat growers are not selling wheat like folks thought they would... holding the wheat back.

I thought the CWB/Single Desk crowd said we wht growers would slam the whole crop on the market at once... and push the prices through the floor... till they were at half price!

Strange... we growers did not do the this with canola or peas either!

What happened Willy?

Tom: What or who are these "CWB/Single Desk crowd" of which you speak?

If someone said that you twits would dump everything on the market at once then take it up with the one who said it.

Harvest is far from over...time will tell what the market will do. Besides that the "system" is only barely adequate during any harvest. Anyway without any quotas whatsoever the "hogs" will get their grain to market and plug the elevators like in the olden days. That should make you happy.
