How are the crops looking?

My old questions about crop condition. My sense is that conditions remain very variable across the prairies with everything a week or two late. More barley went in for a lot of reasons (late seeding, re-seeding, concerns about pasture/hay, etc.). Less Canola.

Where does your crop sit relative to a year ago? Any major changes forced on you by a late spring/dry conditions? Have things improved enough to give you the hope of at least an average crop.

Near Lacombe, crops are about 2-3 weeks behind last year, spotty emergence in some canola. We are getting showers now but it has been amazingly dry for this area. If we dont have a great fall there will be a lot of feed wheat and I dont even want to think about the canola.

Crops here are about the same as Lacombe. We zero-tilled most of our barley and so it is still getting established. Wheat is looking good although it needs more moisture. We have had about an inch of rain over the last two days but soil is drying off already this morning. Went to Drumheller yesterday and crops are in all stages. some pea crops seem to be well advanced but starting to yellow from stress. Hay and pasture in this area is basically at a stand still and we are going to need significant rains to make a decent hay crop.

Here in Beaver County, we are very dry, only had a couple tenths all spring. Canola very patchy and the wheat is starting to yellow. A lot of guys are stopping spraying already. If we don't get rain this week, most the crops will be a write-off.

At Killam Crop Insurance is writing off complete canola acerage, people want to reseed to green feed as cattle feed doesn't exist.

Edmonton is about the same, big writeoffs are coming, without an inch of rain in the next few days!

I have been told it is the dryest in the last 50 years... at least, crops browning in many areas on the hill tops on cereals in the last two days. Huge area, hundreds of square miles of drought, hoppers really starting to eat the eastern side up with the heat where they did get rain at Oyen and Provost.

We got 2 tenths at Killam this afternoon, this will keep us sort of going for another couple of days...

Anyone from the southern Sask./Alta.? How are chickpea/lentil crops looking? How late (particularly on the Kabulis)? Peas??

Southeast Saskatchewan one hour from US border:

Just had 2.2 inches of rain, over two day period.

Here in the northern part of the County of Vermilion river, just received a 1/4 inch of rain on some fields none on others. Puts our total rainfall from May 1st anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. You can draw your own picture on what the crops and pastures look like.

Here west of Dauphin,Mb crops are beginning to look a little better. Cool dry spring gave us some slow emergence, winds and frost forced many producers to reseed alot of canola those that did not reseed were left with some patchy looking fields. Although recent rains (3" in the last 2 weeks) have helped them fill in a bit . Yields won't be as good as last year. We are still faring better than the southeastern part of Manitoba with their excess rains.

Crops are going downhill and fast. May not even make decent pasture after it comes through this oven.
Eviroment Canada says it is 35 degrees in my area. My thermometer says 37 in the shade.
Not a good combination with no moisture in the ground.

I heard reports that Crop Insurance is being asked to write off wheat today...

Elevator Companies are scrambling to buy back canola big time...

It really looks grim, one blessing that if this keeps up for a week, toasting without rain, it will be pretty simple to decide what to do...

I just finished my spraying this AM and here in SW MB the crops are quite variable.

Canola; most fields are patchy but will probably fill in eventualy.

My Canola ranges from fair-good with one field I consider very good and the field I seeded first this spring on May 7 is starting to flower today (June 27)

Peas; very good

Barley; very good

CPS Wht; good-very good

Neighbours CWRS; good-very good

Winter Wheat; poor-fair

moisture is adaquate (sp?) but will need some more within a week if we want this crop to finish.

Around Innisfail crops are starting to go into the flaf leaf and most of the wheat is 8-10 inches tall. Some canola is bolting and it has not filled in. We have had anywhere from 1/2-1 inch of rain since middle of May. Hay and pastures are starting to go backwards and some timothy was touched with frost and has not recovered. Straw and other feeds are going to be at a premium in an area that is suppose to be or use to be a sure thing.

I understand one farm east of Camrose, without crop insurance, is about to work undr 6000 acres of Canola...

Edmonton South .25, Edmonton East .5, Namao 1" with hail, very spotty, but will help for a few days...

I understand this goes through to the Manitoba border, app. from Lacombe to Yorkton with a few good pockets between...
