I wonder if canola swathed east-west would blow in a
        west wind? I'm thinking no?

Klause. I hope your not trying to be a smart
ass. One day its a west wind from a front and
the next front, its from the north. In fact
most cold fronts do blow in the the north. In
southern alberta we swath into the south west
for the wind and then a north cold front
blows in. You never know what angle it will
come at. There is a lot of canola blown
around this year. I would be surprised if 10%
of the entire western canola crop is lost to
          wind.

The odds on a east west swath is better than north south swaths on not moving.

Lots of times the east/west swaths blow both
ways since the west winds are actually south
west and then they also blow from the north.
Had some wind that was a bit south of south
west and all the north south swaths were
better. You can play the odds but this year
in S AB we had swath blowing winds from every
              direction but straight East.

My thoughts...early seeded canola s/b swathed E/W because cold fronts in late Aug/early Sept come mainly from the west. Later seeded canola s/b swathed N/S because as we get later into fall, the winds come more from the north. PS. LUCK will prevail.

We swathed 200 acres of canola east-west, and the wind in Humboldt is blowing out of the west... I'm hoping they stay put whilst we try combining the last of the wheat in MB...
