NDP Carbon Tax Debate - Thoughts?

    >

I can see oil companies such as Shell supporting such a tax as the monies raised will most likely go back to some oil companies to use in clean energy research etc.

How about a stupid tax, that way most of the cost
will be borne by NDP MPs.

How will Canada remain competitive if they put a carbon tax (or cap and trade)on energy, when the USA doesn't?
We already pay substantially more for fuel in comparison.....why not add another tax to make us more uncompetitive!
The NDP should forget this goofy idea until they can get the USA, Russia, Korea, and China, to sign on?
        Good luck with that.

Energy is already taxed alot at the provincial and federal level.

Market swings in energy costs have been large in the last decade. When prices go up for any reason, consumers get more efficient and use less. Increasing energy efficiency is a good investment if you want to increase productivity.

Taxation policy is used by all governments to accomplish various goals.

If the price of oil rises because of market forces or because of taxation there is a transfer of wealth from consumers to oil companies and/or to governments.

Most of the world's oil is produced by state owned exporters in the mid east or by large multinational corporations whose shareholder could be anywhere in the world. Market forces have transferred huge amounts of revenue to oil producers whether they be in Alberta or Saudi Arabia.

Whether a carbon tax is good policy or not is up for debate. But the amount of tax revenue involved would be very small relative to the transfer of revenue that is occurring in the market.

I can see why Mother Shell would be all for it....after Alison Redford handed them over $800 million to build a CCS plant.....I think they get about $125 million a year in carbon credits!
Mother Shell might just build a few more if the Alberta and Canadian government will pay for them? Money in the bank...paid for with your taxes!

They won't have to pay anything for the storage space. The Alberta government "expropriated" that space from the rightful owners (no compensation-no access to the courts) under Bill 24, the carbon capture bill.....one of the most disgraceful outright property thefts in the civilized world!
