Well another week has come and gone and we now have excess moisture thanks to 1 inch last weekend and half again the other day plus a few tenths. Hail was reported in area and is in the 5 to 70% range. Drowning out is starting to appear where sloughs were seeded. Most have parked the sprayer, tonight's low of 7 you really don't want to extend this crop any more the odd guy is still trying to give it every thing hopping for a pay day. That to is now dwindling away with the huge drop in grain prices on all crops.
Hrs is headed and flowering, Still looks good with lodging taking place. Midge was not a problem this year as very few found any when scouting. YEA one thing we didn't have to spray!
Potential is their but here is a fact on the HRS seeded May 14 it needs till 24 th of August (no Frost) that's 30 days. HRS seeded June 1st needs till Sept 10, that's 46 days. If the weather keeps the same pattern Not going to make it. We need heat in a big way to rush this crop.
Barley is looking ok to great but the heavy rain and winds have had their way with thick crops and farmers are worried if they will fill properly.
Peas are finishing flowering and starting to shut down. The high wind and rain have turned tall crops into a little lower crop in height. Rain will help fill top pods so have a chance at average normal year yield.
Soy the crop that continues to impress, it is flowering or just starting. No pods present. It is only 18 inch tall so far but were kind of cold the last few weeks.
Flax is still looking strong and all have sprayed for disease. This is one crop where spraying definitely gives you a return.
Oats all crops are nice lodging is happening. most are headed except the late late oats.
Canola is all over the map from finishing up flowering to few fields just starting. Hail and canola don't go together well. Some have sprayed ATP I think and Boron to get the crop to bounce back will see how that turns out.
Canola is also all over the map some of the new varieties are tall tall tall. Funny part poding is from arm to elbow to just above. Shorter varieties is the same. Will be interesting how it shakes out. If the price keeps sliding Canola acres will be lower again in 2014. Sorry you just cant keep spending on a crop and not get paid for it. Costs of growing canola are getting out of hand.
So to sum up the week major rain events Friday Monday and Wednesday. Hail in some areas. Cold temps for this time of year its Third week of July not August.
Winter wheat in area has problems and you cant spray for it.
Till she is in the bin, and its still along way off mother nature rules the day. And she can be a Bitch if she wants to. Be safe and have fun!
