Wheat and Barley Commissions Appoint General
Manager
The Saskatchewan Wheat Development
Commission (SWDC) and the Saskatchewan
Barley Development Commission (SBDC) are
pleased to announce the appointment of Tom
Steve as General Manager of the two
commissions. Both SWDC and SBDC were newly
formed in June of this year.
Steve brings a wealth of experience in the grain
industry to the position – most recently as Director
of Customer Relations and Service with a leading
Canadian agribusiness where he led programs
aimed at strengthening relationships with farmer
customers and advancing the corporate brand.
“We are pleased to welcome Tom to help us build
a platform for growth in the Saskatchewan cereals
industry and enhance producers’ bottom lines,”
said Cherilyn Nagel Chair of the SWDC Interim
Board of Directors. “Tom’s industry experience
and contacts will be a valuable asset as we chart
a course for the future.”
Her comments were echoed by those of Bill
Cooper, Chair of the SBDC Interim Board. “Tom
has an extensive background in agriculture,”
commented Cooper, “and is knowledgeable about
barley and wheat production, research and
market development. His leadership will be key to
the commissions’ ability to reward levy payers for
their investment.”
Steve has also worked extensively with farmer-
elected boards. He began his working career as a
broadcast journalist and later held senior
communications roles in government.
“I look forward to working with the two
commissions on behalf of Saskatchewan wheat
and barley growers who now have a direct say in
innovations aimed at enhancing the profitability
and marketability of these crops,” Steve said.
The Ministry of Agriculture formally announced
the establishment of the two new commissions on
June 20, 2013. The SWDC and SBDC, which will
be producer-elected and directed, will ensure
producers have the resources, leadership and
provincial, national and international
representation to strengthen Saskatchewan’s
competitive advantage and to ensure producers’
and Saskatchewan’s interests are protected.
Check-off dollars administered by the
commissions will go toward research and market
development initiatives that improve wheat and
barley varieties, grow their marketability and
provide higher value to producers.
Both commissions will be based in Saskatoon
