    About Angry-ville

One of the Moderators on this web site commented:

"This very large chat room has gained the moniker 'Angry-ville', and that's because of the very cynycial, opinionated, anonymous viewpoints that are placed by a few people."

Let's discuss cynical viewpoints, angry and opinionated viewpoints, but let's do it in the context of WHY farmers are very cynical, opinionated and angry. Perhaps the moderator can better relate to actual examples.

In this week's farm newspaper, Manitoba Co-operator, the Chairman of the Canadian Wheat Board has stated that:

"The board did not violate its code of conduct by participating in this event, as the policy adopted in May 2001 allows for this type of activity."

If farmers practiced being defiantly cynical, they would perhaps call Mr. Ritter a bold-faced liar, but since most farmers try to be politely cynical, they use the word "misinformation' to describe what he has publically tried to pass off as fact.

Farmers should be angry with the Chairman of the CWB who tries to tell us that that Mr. Goodale's appointee didn't contravene Board policy. Farmers watched an appointed Director representing the CWB, attend a Liberal fundraiser, ( taking money out of farmers' pooling accounts to pay for it) even though the CWB Policy quoted from their website clearly states,
"Members of the Board who are appointed by the Governor-in-Council shall not represent the CWB in making financial or other contributions to political organizations or any other candidates seeking election to government at any level in Canada. " Good grief. Should anyone be surprised farmers are a little tweaked?

Another CWB policy taken from their website states,

"Partisan politics must not be introduced into the workplace in any way which creates undue or inappropriate influence on employees within the CWB".

Is anyone surprised that farmers would be angry, cynical or opinionated when we found out that four CWB staff and six Wheat Board Directors attended a Liberal fundraiser? Not only was the original Code of Conduct quietly changed and farmers were not informed, but the policy left remaining in place was broken.

Are farmers angry when we are treated with disrespect? Yes. Are we cynical? Yes. Because to have any other reaction would mean we are stupid, or we care so little about our business we don't care what happens to the pooling accounts. Are farmers opinionated? Yes. Farmers' questions and rebuttals go unanswered, and it seems as if intimidation or humiliation or intimidation seem to be the only tools used by the Wheat Board when reasoned answers cannot be called upon.

I am one of those Agri-villers who makes a living from farming and I think it is positive and necessary that farmers get angry and cynical when Mr. Ritter has the audacity to try and tell farmers that the Board did not violate their own Code of Conduct when clearly, they did.

For those who try to make it seem as if anger, opinions, and being cynical aren't justified, don't try and go there. Anyone who tries to make the farmer look like the bad guy here is right out of line.

    Parsley,

A further point on tough love...

If I didn't care about the CWB, and actually try to improve it so my community and neighbours could try to eeke out a meager existance, I would keep my mouth (I mean keyboard) shut...

For those of us with the marketing gift, and interest to plug through and learn to understand all the complexities of the existing system, would be better served if we didn't say anything to anyone.

That way we couldn't be put down and would have even more market power by not giving away our secrets...

I believe some think passion is anger, yet there is a difference...

Passion to try to make the world a better place is good, yet anger is destructive, therefore there is in fact a big difference between these two emotions...

We all learn much more if we don't beat around the bush, because those bold enough to work through issues are representitive of a much much larger group who believe it is futile to say anything, simply because they didn't actually or easily fulfill changes in the past that they knew were justified and to the benefit of all in their community...

But it does all come down to this,

    To err is human,

But to forgive, really not take offence and genuinely try to forget, go on, and create a better world through brotherly love... is truly a divine attribute...

I hope this is the reason people passionately work through issues in our AG community, simply to try to make the world a better place, because this is just the right thing to do...

This week's farm publication, the Manitoba Co-operator, sums up it's editorial about the CWB's Pool Return Outlook, commonly called the PRO, by stating:

"The PRO for barley, it seems, is actually a manipulated figure designed to suck barley into a sales program that is not returning the highest price and best returns for farmers. The PRO, in short , is a con."

It seems that that not only farmers are angry with what the Canadian Wheat Board has been saying. The editorial explains how the CWB "dumped 56,000 tonnes of barley at $135 per tonne, a loss of $45 per tonne, or $2.5 million in total, over what could have been realized from domestic sales."

Discussing the PRO, the Manitoba Co-operator editorial even says:

"It is easiest of all to be critical of a description of a program, like the one in Grain Matters, which is so far from reality that the word "lie" pops to mind."

Because the Board has not been straight on so many issues, their credibility has been permanently damaged and the entire Designated Area is turning into an angry-ville.

      And with good reason.
