"This very large chat room has gained the moniker 'Angry-ville', and that's because of the very cynycial, opinionated, anonymous viewpoints that are placed by a few people."
Let's discuss cynical viewpoints, angry and opinionated viewpoints, but let's do it in the context of WHY farmers are very cynical, opinionated and angry. Perhaps the moderator can better relate to actual examples.
In this week's farm newspaper, Manitoba Co-operator, the Chairman of the Canadian Wheat Board has stated that:
"The board did not violate its code of conduct by participating in this event, as the policy adopted in May 2001 allows for this type of activity."
If farmers practiced being defiantly cynical, they would perhaps call Mr. Ritter a bold-faced liar, but since most farmers try to be politely cynical, they use the word "misinformation' to describe what he has publically tried to pass off as fact.
Farmers should be angry with the Chairman of the CWB who tries to tell us that that Mr. Goodale's appointee didn't contravene Board policy. Farmers watched an appointed Director representing the CWB, attend a Liberal fundraiser, ( taking money out of farmers' pooling accounts to pay for it) even though the CWB Policy quoted from their website clearly states,
"Members of the Board who are appointed by the Governor-in-Council shall not represent the CWB in making financial or other contributions to political organizations or any other candidates seeking election to government at any level in Canada. " Good grief. Should anyone be surprised farmers are a little tweaked?
Another CWB policy taken from their website states,
"Partisan politics must not be introduced into the workplace in any way which creates undue or inappropriate influence on employees within the CWB".
Is anyone surprised that farmers would be angry, cynical or opinionated when we found out that four CWB staff and six Wheat Board Directors attended a Liberal fundraiser? Not only was the original Code of Conduct quietly changed and farmers were not informed, but the policy left remaining in place was broken.
Are farmers angry when we are treated with disrespect? Yes. Are we cynical? Yes. Because to have any other reaction would mean we are stupid, or we care so little about our business we don't care what happens to the pooling accounts. Are farmers opinionated? Yes. Farmers' questions and rebuttals go unanswered, and it seems as if intimidation or humiliation or intimidation seem to be the only tools used by the Wheat Board when reasoned answers cannot be called upon.
I am one of those Agri-villers who makes a living from farming and I think it is positive and necessary that farmers get angry and cynical when Mr. Ritter has the audacity to try and tell farmers that the Board did not violate their own Code of Conduct when clearly, they did.
For those who try to make it seem as if anger, opinions, and being cynical aren't justified, don't try and go there. Anyone who tries to make the farmer look like the bad guy here is right out of line.
