Who is planning on using only certified seed to plant this years flax crop
like the Flax Council would like us to? I've talked to a lot of Producers
here and a lot aren't going to. When you consider the people who aren't
going to sell all their flax stocks to initially purge the system, what
good does using only certified seed do to make sure everything going
forward won't have any potential triffid contamination from old stocks,
let alone potential contamination from volunteering in the fields.
I prepriced some of my 2014 production and asked the buyer if I need to be
using certified seed and they told me not for the market they're going
into. Had there been a financial incentive, like a premium, for anyone
who did play by the rules I could see more participation, but to expect
everyone to incur extra costs for no reward is just asking for non
compliance, voluntary of course.
Funny thing is flax has been one of the shining stars in the market
compared to other commodities, would it be any better if Europe was in
full acceptance of the current situation or is it getting there, some how,
through someone else's back door?
