Here's something to think about. Why is it that
during the Grainco consolidation of the past couple
of decades, when mergers and take overs were
happening, they had to pass the sniff test with the
Competition Bureau? So, how is it you can have a
non competing railway duopoly and everything is
fine? Open running rights anyone?
It is a shame a "developed" country like Canada is
in this predicament. There are trackless
abandoned railbeds all over the west. Amazing
how things change, changed by "economics". All
those grain dependant branchlines, too costly to
maintain. Who needs them? Inefficient!! Put the
grain on the highways with weights and volumes
they were never designed to withstand. Public
taxes will pay for repairs and upgrades.
Visionaries.
Does Western Canada need a grain industry any
larger than what we need to support our own
domestic needs? Ask the businesses that supply
the "Primary" Producer with the goods and
services we need to do our job. How important are
we to them? Huh, Bayer, Monsanto, Dow,
Syngenta, Agrium, Koch, Yara, CN & CP, CNH, JD,
AGCO, Glencore, Richardson, Cargill?
So why is consolidation good for everyone else in
the chain but the Producer? We will continue to be
exploited because no "ONE" will ever be or get big
enough to stand toe to toe and eye to eye with
them.
