I believe that UPOV'91 has merits but I
will vote for a party that will, for
sure, financially support public
breeding! Without that support we will
have a canola model in cereals. I would
suggest that the vast majority of
farmers are opposed to this.
In Saskatchewan we have an unusual
situation with respect to pulses. Pulse
breeding in Canada is almost entirely at
the CDC Saskatoon and is funded via SPG,
provincial government, federal sources
and some private.
Currently the funding can be considered
UPOV lite as farmers through SPG fund a
large part of the breeding. So long as
farmers continue to foster a strong
relationship with breeders at the CDC,
they will not be faced with higher costs
for breeding and can expect continued
high performance varieties.
As farmer you may want to consider what
you can do to build upon the
relationship with the CDC, as this
really is our best option going forward
under UPOV 91. It's important as
producers, that we ensure SPG know the
importance of this institution to the
pulse industry.
