Well most of us have probably sprayed or walked some fields after last weeks idiotic rain event. Can mother nature just take her rain and go home. If it stopped now and didn't rain till end of July we might, might have a average crop. Might.
Spraying, wow that's a coffee shop talk. If the weather forecast takes place word out in are area is some fields wont get sprayed. Yes some cant believe but they will be heading or flowering or dead.
Peas this is one crop that hates water and yesterday driving home you could see the damage in field.
Yellow sick looking perfect rows. Funny the thing that's different this year with 2010 their are hardly any nice green areas. In 2010 the hill tops or on a flat field the 1 ft higher areas in elevation made something. We will unfortunately have to look at getting out of our pea contracts for fall next week if the rain continues. Their is no way in hell our farm will cover the contract not even half. We only contracted 22 bushels a acre.
Canola, Purple is the new green. No its not a shortage of sulfur its roots that are sitting in mud, water. Large areas with crop dying or sick. Higher areas have some crop. Seems early seeded might make some thing but late is struggling. Guy who was seeding last weeks is week and sick as seedlings sitting in mud have a hard time surviving. Once the sun came out the damage was revealed. Some flat fields 50% of plants are dead or purple and trying to bolt with out cabbaging to flower and make seed. This happened in 2010 the results are thin sick plants that give small useless pods.
Wheat is one crop that touch wood so far is doing not bad. Sad part last night yellow ting could be seen in lower areas of the field. If the rain hits wheat will drop in next weeks crop report. Spraying is taking place with disease spray added since most is getting close to flag.
Barley is coming up and will be sprayed soon. It is struggleing with moisture but still doing ok.
Flax in area that looked so good coming out of the ground has a awesome yellow color to it. Flax doesn't perform well in mud. If the water continues lots will be trying to get out of contracts because if 2010 taught us anything its you cant make a silk purse out of a pigs ear. Simply all the science and chemical or fert in the world cant pull a good crop out of a disaster.
Oats is up and struggling as water on late seeded is to much.
So to sum up the week in general. One week ago it looked like we were on our way to one nice average crop. Some fields would give better than others but overall a nice average crop. Well after a week of total shit and rain and cool temps mother nature is winning this one. Crop has slipped to 2010 levels, water running in every low area or sitting. The ground is full again and not taking any more.
Spraying is way behind on every single farm.
Funny how a week ago their most were optimistic we would have a great, or average crop, that has changed to lets get this year done and hopefully put something in the bin and work on 2015. Its July 1st their is maybe 60 growing days left with a cool July their is another troubling natural occurrence on every ones mind.
Have a great week and be safe.
