how does jd tanks compare to bourg tanks

    #2
Have only ever had a flexicoil (NH brand) and just recently the Bourgault. Like the simplicity of the Bourgault but seems archaic to me. I liked my other as well which is similar to the JD concept but in comparison to the Bourg it seemed over engineered. To me, accuracy seemed about the same. Calibration is onerous if your anal.

Have only ever ran a BG. They all need to be learned before your good with it.
For various reasons may be my last BG.

I looks like Seedhawk is at the top off the list as best now?

We will find out when independent farmers have a chance to operate them.
            Cost?
            I pad interface?
            Electric motors?
            Scales?
            Calibration?
            Simplicity?
            Weak points?
            Service?
            Reliability?

Time will tell. Technology is our friend like it or not. No one has a phone older than 5 years old, many of the current tanks are old.

My farm operates fine with a 15 year old Flexi-coil tank. Glad I don't have my 15 year old phone.

Opinion qualifier. I have only ever had a 2155 and now a 5440.
Initially I believed BG was the only one you could buy at 15 years of age and rely on them. I still believe that but as your requirements change so can your price point.
BG has now entered a price area where I can upgrade drill and cart to a 5 yr or less CaseIh for less than half of any BG "upgrade". And pull more feet with same power. Drill is currently a 5710 with MRBs.
Others have now caught up in tank size somewhat. For me to go bigger than I am in BG would be a big tag.
Moving forward I question a few things.
Does the auger style make for more manifold impact? Sectional control looks complicated and slow as opposed to right at the roller.
I've always wondered if the auger isn't harder on seed. It can start to grind things up. Especially if you're having product building up on auger and tubing. And it can depending on conditions and product. On that note I had major issues with a certain products dust with moisture.
Also, the auger can only deliver so much product. They may have improved this but on mine I have HO auger and occasionally have transmission on 100. Remember, no matter your footage or rates, it all has to come thru one sausage maker.
However my experience is also that they are simple and tough. Not many recalls on BG. In my area still better percentage of market share.

We did a walk around video interview with the Seed Hawk guys last week at the Farm Progress Show. Here is their overview. Take care,

Dog we owned a couple 430 bushel jd tanks over the last 15 years and the best way to describe them is high maintenance. They were fairly accurate but required a lot of TLC to stay running good. We switched to the 700 bushel Bourgault and as of right now I like the decision to have switched. Only thing I hate is the price we paid. Gerry B probably bought himself another new plane on my dime. Will see how much love they require over the years.

BP, do your tanks have low, medium and high ranges(drive chains)? Our 6000 series does and we use them to try and get the transmissions to operate as close to 50 as possible. Have to take what auger is installed into each tank and desired rate into account while choosing chain range. Do the earlier models operate the same?

I think the bourg carts look like they give the seed a rougher ride compared to our old flexicoil metering system.

Crusher have you ever considered the economics of overlap, or sectional control? I do agree simple is good, but at what cost. Then the risk of adapting to new technology and the risk of it not working.

The savings in fert, and seed are huge and make up the extra cost for new equipment financing. The opportunity and risk costs are more difficult to measure.

Bourgault very simple, reliable. Auger metering works well, and accurate. Not many fans of the jd tanks on the combine forum. The flexicoil variable rate carts are very good too. Too bad flexicoil didnt stay in the business, they were far ahead of bg and jd.

                            Rareearth,

We have manual sectional control on our anhydrous. I haven't done the math on the payback for sectional control on an air tank. What does a new tank with sectional control cost? And the equipment to control it? Payback on 1,800 acres?

Farmaholic. I have the chains in question in high range all the time except when seeding canola from small tank.
Again my reasons for questioning my next drill are my own. BG is an excellent product.
