    Spraying wheat west of saskatoon...

900 ac of wheat just heading. Only 9-11 spikes.

Neighbours barley here at home will only do 57 bu an acre (seeds/head times heads a ft on 12" spacing)... no bumper crops.

These are just observations... may be out there but...

    That's a 20 to 30% less than last year yield. 14.16 spikelet's 2013.

Klause/SF3 - How accurate have you found your July yield projections over the years?

What guidelines beside spikelets do you use for your yield estimates?

I find wheat to be close. Peas way off, canola is hit or miss. The hard part is truly capturing "average". TKW can be hard to pin down. Based on early counts my rye is set to run 85-90.

Ok would get klause if he ever gets his ass out of the sprayer to count some yield. My 9120 caseih is out to lunch. Hauling out of bin is accurate.

Oliver walk fields look at your wheat plants. When heads come out open up start with counting spikelet's. Last year average was 14 to 16. This year do the same, oh their 12 to 14 in our area. Ah water water water. Plant might look good at 70 miles a hour but once inside field you see a whole new world.
Then as the plant fills go walking again. Now count the seeds per spikelet. 2 to 6 av 15 x 4 (av) = 60. You knew if it didn't freeze you were going to have to go buy some more bins or bags.
Its really easy go walking and understand weather your crop and environment. If one step is screwed some where throughout the year you don't have a barn burner. Real simple lesson you cant make a silk purse out of a pigs ear. With a plant if something goes wrong on the way to the finish line your have a average to just above or a wreck. Mother nature is in control not some chemical or seed etc.
