Bread winner right now the public is saying they won't pay for 100% public breeding.

How much do farmers want to pay?

If we put a consumer "tax" on exports it makes our grain less competitive v other export nations

To sell for equal it will mean less back to farm

Why don't you still grow Ebony? Is it deregistered? If so, Why was it?

Really Gustd? They asked "the public" if they were prepared to continue paying? I think if that had actually been done, with the realities of moving instead to Monsanto and co completely controlling the seed supply spelled out, the answer would have been a resounding "NO".

The governments of Canada and all provinces of all political stripes have been reducing budgets in real dollars since at least 1994

We could do a self serving survey to show the great public support. Doesn't mean budgets from taxpayers are going up.

Grass farmer how would you gauge public support?

        Actions speak louder than words

I can get you a million facebook likes. Cash is tougher

          "Why I don't grow Ebony"

Perhaps because its not available any more and also because Monsanto bought it and withdrew it from the market, "vested interests"

My post was intended to show that just because we are paying "X times more" for seed it does not mean we are receiving "X times more in yield"

What i was trying to get at was the grain companies will be taking delivery of their own ip varieties, only, the old varieties are neutered in a war of attrition.

Saying you can grow your "x" variety all you want....except you can't deliver it anywhere....

I'm behind the curve and dont see all the angles,so someone just tell me i'm plain wrong and that will never happen, but you better be right.

Gustgd, I think you are confusing what the public are saying (or might say if asked) with what the Government and their crony capitalist Corporate buddies are saying.

Grassfarmer, crony Capitalist Cororate buddies? Hahaha. So if it was the Libs or NDP in power, who would the cronies be? Suzuki, unions, RBC (major Lib contributors),?

I'll take the job creators, the companies that make major donations to charities, the companies that are a major part of the economy as my cronies any day.

Grass farmer. I just take direction from those in the public with cheques. If the grass farmer back to the farm research coop wants to invest in breeding and gift that to farmers.
                  I'll go for that

As it is no one is lining up to gift anything. If farmers want to get involved in public breeding an I think they do. They have to get ready to pay more.
                  All I'm saying.

Cotton I guess that's unlikely to happen unless customers demand it. IP systems are expensive and someone has to pay for added expense.
IMO there will always be room for bulk commodities. Do you want to be in that business?

Braveheart always playing the old "would be worse with socialists" bogeyman.
Truth is the worst excesses of extreme right are just about the same as extreme left.

                      Just in case you care:

It is against the law for any company to donate any money to any federal political party in Canada.

Individual donations only from people are allowed.

Grassfarmer, it's true. I was raising the spectre of Socialist boogeyman.

You're dead on about extremists. Extreme conservatives, extreme liberals, communists, Muslims, especially extreme Christians, definitely extreme *******.

Extremely hot babes excluded of course!

The current federal govt is made up of some extreme Conservatives, and some extreme Christians. Far from perfect, they're people after all. But Stephen Harper, for me, is the best mis of a social and fiscal conservative.

Tom, I do care to know that. Thanks. It must be a recent change as RBC used to support previous Liberal efforts.

                            Braveheart,

The reason the Liberal party is out in the cold politically... is that the Conservative Party of Canada moved into the centre of the political spectrum where the Liberals used to reside. Now the NDP are more Conservative than the Liberals... which has led to Justin being elected.

Labels politically are basically useless... as the landscape has moved so much!

I agree Tom. The political landscape shifts so that it must be built on sand. Yikes!

Back to seed. Curious. If the "sky is about too fall" people were right about farm saved or farmer to farmer sales, how would anyone know? Will there be seed police?
