Happy comes from achievement, accomplishment, self worth/pride, I agree with hobby...Rarely does one buy happiness.
The problem of a first world. Too much-too easy-for too many. A big part of society isn't happy because they didn't earn it, and those that do earn it, are targets/labelled greedy for political/social opportunism. For a long time in ag, the same political opportunism laballed producers as "needy" of subsidy...just like a welfare case...when in reality the ag industry is so vitally important. So destructive was this.
The ag lifestyle arguement is getting a little long in the tooth when you start comparing lifestyles.
Is there opportunity out there? Sure there is. But why take the risk? To accomplish what?...when politics gets in the way or can simply take it away. I am a risk taker but the weight of the current political/social environment has me holing up. And a simple upturn in the market...making me more profitable...just doesn't cut it anymore.
Politics is the root of the happy/unhappy question.
Think ag society isn't so much unhappy as dissillusioned with political reality. As for the rest of society... too many worried/complaining about what someone else has/got for "free"....a consequence of liberal-left strategy.

I will also add...while i agree with Tom from another thread that the current "conservative" government has moved towards the center, and one shouldn't get hung up on labels, but the current Federal Conservatives have, IMO, been net positive when it comes to changing economic/confidence...and thus societal "happiness".

All great points.
Some would like think I'm very unhappy. Those that know me see a person that loves his family and has a passion for farming and growing a crop. Yes I bitch about what goes on with farming and the struggles we have to grow and market a crop.
Point being it's not very easy, but most do it because we love to see the ground wake up after a hard cold winter and give life to plants . The thrill of seeing fields bloom to seeing the seeds form to filling bins and bags and then getting the land. Ready for winter to do it all again next spring.
For me summer is busy with activity from spring to fall. When I say going to the lake home, it might be a trip up after supper for the night and then leaving at 5 to load trucks at 6 and be on the road.
The family stays and plays but I'm gone.
It wouldn't be if the grain I contracted winter of 2013 was actually moved by now. Funny thing all the bs of huge carry over, we will be down to one bag of oats and two bins of hrs for seed and one barley by end of august. Their is no huge carry over just bs and that's what makes me angry and sad. Useless bs that takes a awesome once and a life time crop that the stars aligned with all it's challenges for some pricks running a railway and same pricks running grain companies to quash.
So yea on the bs front I'm pissed.
But on the family friends and farming I'm the king of the world happy.
Have a great day fellow farmers.

Its hard to maintain a state of happiness when you always feel like someone's victim, real or perceived. Who are you kidding when you continually tell yourself all is well, and it isn't. False gratitude equals lying to yourself. Careers, relationships, finances, lifestyles, all affect you.

I am happy we can have family together from around the globe... in one room... at one time... communication that is virtually free other than normal internet charges.
Mongolia by Scype, smartphones for Edson, Vancouver Island, Killam, and a couple of us sitting at the kitchen table stacking the phones putting them on speaker.
Now we have low cost cell unlimited long distance... and internet.
The world has shrunk.
Air travel is low cost.
My grandfather and father are enjoying the other side of life... in the Spirit... and I am happy knowing their hard work was not in vain... that we honour their principals, heritage and lives.
Cheers! we live in a fascinating time to be alive. We have more opportunity than any people at any time in history. And we are here to be a part of this great time in history.
Have a great day. If people are unhappy... it is by choice... a state of mind.

Tom, you are dead on the money! Only a very small percentage of people on this planet have a standard of living comparable to ours. I tell my grandchildren this fact every chance I get.
BUT there are disconcerting trends clearly visible and without the right to free speech this great nation could become a very different place.

Agree there is no place better to live or a better time to be alive than here and now. Those that have less but are satisfied are happier. The Filipino people are always smiling and happy, perhaps to be HERE. Unhappiest are those that NEVER have enough and constantly accumulate, add to their possessions and their satisfaction is short lived. Life is short, be happy or change something.

Working hard and seeing results makes me happy. Canada greatest contry in the world. We should all appreciate where we live. Farming is tough, and there are many issues which make it hard. I truely fell sorry for farmers in SE SK and SW MB for all the rain. I have two brother inlaws who farm in SE SK. Crops are the shits.
Also what makes me happy is the Harper Reformer Allanice CPC party are in there last year of uselessness. Paul Martin left Harper 13 billion surplus, he blew that the first year. Increased national debt by 125 billion and increased the national debt to 600 billion. So much for fiscially responsible Conseratives.
