BTW it's not all about luck - take the blinders off man. You need a trip up here, I have been down there and it's not good I agree, but I totally think that realy good crops "happen all by accident" - that's b/s... There is wheat and canola that will be below ave here and it should not be - not all mother nature .. There are wheat and canola that are awesome here - with the exact same "mother nature" weather .Some Peas suck as well, including ours - but there are peas that will hit 60 with the exact same weather right across the road. There are many , many factors besides "mother nature" if you know anything about crop growth and issues at hand... It drives me nuts when I hear guys say the lucky b/s. 80% of the time there is a reason for "luck"

Furrow, while I hear you on the lucky factor maybe being less than some think, I believe there are other luck factors at play as well. Around here, it is seeding dates, seeding dates, and again, seeding dates. If you were like me and had breakdowns, or run a one man show, and so simply do not get it done as fast as the next guy, you may luck out.
I did not do anything special or better than the next guy, I lucked out a lot with seeding a bit later. Over here, later seeing aside from frost, is as good or better than early seeding.
Over here, it is dumb luck. There are few poor agronomic farmers any more, yet we all have our share of good and poor crops, like no other year I have seen before. There is no rhyme or reason, at least this year. I have very nice canola, beside a very wealthy farmer who I know spares NOTHING. His crop sucks. Kitty corner is the distance. It is not his fault. Same weather, and I truly do not know why he had issues. This is the story of the area here.
I am actually quite worried as to the reason behind the problem fields, because it is impossible to pinpoint.
Like for me last year. I threw my heart and a whole lot into my canola. My canola did not make thirty, and I frankly have no idea why. Again, frightening. Guys who I know put FAR less than me into it, were getting 40's and 50's, and there I sat.
It reversed to an extent this year, for no rhyme or reason.
I still believe in pure, sheer luck being a stupendously large factor in how well a guys crops perform, simply because on adjacent fields, for no reason anyone can reckon, crops are performing vastly differently.
Seeding date is all I can think of...

It has a lot to do with mother nature.
The red army beside me has a unlimited bank account they give their crops every single thing it needs. Guess what a foot of rain at the wrong time and no crop or half the crop, you cant control the one thing that makes a crop Mother nature.
Yes I know how crops grow but why some keep saying I get a great crop because I give it every thing and I do every thing right.
BS a rain at the wrong time a hailstorm at the right time these are beyond your control.
Yes it was wrong to ride tom but lately his posts have been real weird almost laughing at guys in the east saying we know nothing. Now with his dads passing I understand what was going on with him and its understandable. Deepest Condolences to you.
Never do I ever say a guy with a great crop is awful. God man we all do this for a living and a bumper gives us some extra money. Except last year.
On the complaining side. No one is on our side as a farmer, No one its us against them and when we fight amongst our selves over BS that's what they love. Divide and Conquer.
Last winters shit show on grain transportation was a prime example. East Sask had no movement we were sacrificed by grain companies and railways, So some of you could get your product delivered and fill contracts like we had. Now were moving grain, filling contracts that are 6 to 8 months old. And pricing the other left over grain at todays price. Why because its real hard to keep selling product when you cant deliver product that you sold a year in advance. Cash boys and bills to pay.
Then this years floods came nothing like any farmer in Canada has seen before. Sorry a big hail storm that gave your area a three inch rain and flooded the creek is not what happened. Water logged fields and then a foot of rain. Unless you live in that area you don't get it.
Yea farming is farming I know that but when it changes and it will, it will be interesting how some will react after 8 years of prolonged drought or 8 years of frost in a row or 8 more years of rain. Then you can tell me how mother nature is not the driving force in Canada. Its not a new seed variety or herbicide or fungicide they are needed but when you have only 120 days from snow to snow to grow a crop their can be no F&^kups along the way.
Now on yield Yea Draw a line from PA to Saskatoon to Moosejaw to Border East of that line way lower than last year with lentils peas and Canola sucking the hind one odd field good to great here and their.
West of that line all the way to the Rockies its great not as good as last year but its great.
Good for you guys! No actually congratulations you did your job and are going to be rewarded.
Have a happy Saskatchewan Day because its just a Farm!

Thx SF3
I need to write with words like painting a picture.
Less is more... Passionate people lime us can get our thoughts across without all the baggage.
Assume the best from folks... Words like in real life can't be changed. Agriville is great practice to be an excellent training tool!
Cheers

One other thing freewheat hit the nail on the head.
Best Canola east of regina a whole section just east of city. Awsome. Same farmer same dirt same prescripitons of meds his section across the road is a WTF happened crop I mean it might be the best WTF happened crop in the province.
Seeding dates I cant remember but yes he did have the best one in earlier than the other.
No rhyme or reason on lots of fields. Hell the hailed out shit from July 5th that left just stubs and stocks and shit all is in fool bloom, yes it was kick started in the ass by me with a few things but if it doesn't freeze till 10th of September and we get it swathed it should do ok. Good for hail company that deferred my claim and every single other guy in the area from that storm but also good for us if it makes it.
