Canada loses 110000 jobs USA gains 142000

August Canadian unemployment rate 7% 110000 jobs lost. Unemployment rate among youth 24 years of age and younger 13.4%.How are our educated young people suppose to succeed in today's job market with these dismal numbers. How will they be able to continue the growth of the middle class which is the backbone of the Canadian economy, with such weak job growth?

Meanwhile in the USA unemployment rate is 6.1% and gained 1420000 jobs were added.

The Canadian unemployment rate has been stuck around 7% for months. What's the problem here in Canada? Why are we still lagging the USA?

Big problem here in Canada... Too many kids coming out of university with useless degrees (Liberal Arts, BSc in Comm, Native Studies, etc.)

They go through school, come out, have shit for brains and think that their degree will "give" them a job... whe it doesn't they go back to living with parebts, living off of a spouse, etc.


We need to quit telling teenagers they must go to university... It doesn't work... not everyone is capable of higher learning.

If I have to train another English Major on how to use a scrub brush I will permanently quit the oil patch.

There are a lot of jobs in Canada and no skilled personel to fill them.

Forage farmer- the way unemployment is measured in the USA is what % of the workforce is looking for a job. Their actual unemployment rate is a double digit number and tens of millions are on food stamps with the food stamp rate rising!

In Western Canada unemployment is quite low.....In Sask/Alberta around 4%.

In the east the gravy train is in effect with high unemployment and people not willing to move to the West, which is now is the economic engine of the country. The unionized manufacturing is dead but easterners are having a hard time accepting this.

I agree with Klause about people getting Arts degrees, etc when there should be more of a focus on trades.

The US was anticipating 225,000 non farm jobs and only saw 142,000. I would say they missed the mark just a little.

It is Harpers fault that eastern canada is hell bent to destroy their own economies????? to not try and develop their own natural gas fields???, to drive the costs of electricity up? to shut down mega project constructions??

I think it's an unfortunate attitude to discredit education. this country was to a large degree built on educated immigrants with a strong work ethic. Of course skilled trades provide opportunities, and b/c you don't have a degree in no way indicates a lack of intelligence or worldly outlook. I've seen lots of OTR truck drivers that I would guess have not completed high school that are capable of import/export documents that would make lots of peoples heads spin. Talk to lots of people in unskilled jobs that know tons of stuff. But I think that the elite of this country would prefer that education be preserved for the elite, and thereby limit opportunities for those without formal designation. Nothing wrong with a skilled machinist having an arts degree, and I think it should be encouraged.

U.S. jobs number was also brutal.
Average pre-report guess was 230,000 jobs. this was a major disappointment.

Don't kid yourself about U.S. unemployment as nearly 40% have stopped looking for work and are not counted.

U.S. Fed is on schedule to chop QE entirely by October. Market know thinks the Fed may 'chicken out' as U.S. economy is not very rosy.

Samhill: of course my comments are made in jest. I have no formal education, just grade twelve. But what I have found, is that life is a learning experience. Learning new technologies and keeping abreast of changes will keep the learning process alive and well for me as long as I let it.

That is what is so interesting about farming, it is so diverse and if you want to wear every hat that it takes to farm, you're going to have to know and learn alot. Seems most other vocations specialize in one area but farmers are specialists in alot of areas. Agrologists, accountants, veterinarians, marketers, mechanics, add what you want. Not to many other jobs require as much diverse knowledge as an Agricultural Producer. If you had to pay or hire a person for every area of expertise, primary production wouldn't be viable.

No wonder farmers or most farm kids have no trouble finding work.....

There is a very large difference between studying and learning.


Between knowing and understanding you know nothing.


Universities today focus too much on studying and good marks and not enough in actual understanding.


The culture today breeds a level of arrogance and entitlement into graduates... it hurts them far more than it helps. They feel they earned a high paying job in school and don't need to work for it once they enter the workforce.


obviously has a lot to do with their upbringing... sadly a good work ethic is hard to find.

Much of what you say is true, and I guess people need both schooling and practical. The thing I don't like is that those with higher education will be able to obtain positions that affect the majority in many unfavourable ways. I see this constantly. Ridiculous rules and regulations but when those with good sense should speak up, they don't, b/c they are facing someone with a degree or PHD (piled higher and deeper) and are intimidated, may not have the public speaking skills.
When did someone without an expensive education become a cabinet member or Prime Minister. Or mayor of a major city, these things affect all of us and I think we end up with the fox guarding the chicken coop.

Unemployment everywhere is measured by THOSE looking for work. In Sk, are the First nations, counted? I doubt 4% if they are included, more like 10%. Are the foreign workers "looking"? Again a skewed number?

Give out student loans to jack up tuition to pay for salaries,brain wash everyone in the country they need an education,make the trades and rig type jobs look like for the mentally handicap-creating a serious labour market distortion,monopolize the actual careers that make sence by making them impossible to get into and create a shortage of those professionals,so they can charge what ever the hell they want in the private sector-lawyers dentists,etc..
