We have 10% of harvest complete. Canola is all swathed no cereals are swathed and have been flattened by 3 inches of snow. We farm in central alberta and yes SF3 mother nature #*#*s with us too!

15% done. Just a small hobbyfarmer in todays standards, In fact not even on radar scale. Even though it does not matter, just a comment to farmaholic's comment about size of farm. Your equipment is usually based on the size of your farm. When I look to the west of me and my neighbors land who is now rented out, and see five big combines with the capacity of two to three the size of mine, and men running sprayers, grain carts, swathers, tandems, semis, combines, all equipment moving full bore, vs me and a eighty year old combine operater, who in reality should get more percent done? Not jealous or anything, just pointing out that sometimes you hear remarks about how much someone farms, but does he really need that much more time to complete his harvest than the smaller farmer?

Swathing a MASSIVE but late canola crop right now. Seriously, I have never seen canola like this in pictures, in my dreamiest dreams, or elsewhere. If it freezes though, I will never know what it was. Grrrr...

There has been nearly ZERO window to combine. There is maybe a couple hundred acres of barley combined within 20 miles of me. Oh and one field of peas.

Regarding the big boyz and their toys. I think most big farms have WAY more machine than farms used to have per acre. It took my dad a long time to cut 80 acres of canola with his 15 foot CCIL. Many guys have 2 new 36 foot swathers out cutting canola these days. I know for a fact I put more hours in than they do. But I don't care. I don't want it. I am simply saying that more acres does not mean harder, longer hours. Especially if one has a few men running around.

Our countryside went from nothing swathed last week, to almost nothing standing. It is amazing what a couple guys and those new swathers with the reels just a whipping around can cut. Like holy cow!

How fast can one travel with those things? Those reels must be going 10 miles an hour...I should just hire mine done for crying out loud.

Good point. So when we get our great ag reports and percent completed is it based on acres only, number of farmers only, or both? How do you feel is a more accurate way do tell the public about the ag sector.

Free wheat a few years ago when we were drowned out I went out to help my Buddy at Three Hills Ab.

He is a legend at Macon and does a lot of their prototype testing...

Anyway I was put on the wind rower. .. had a M205 with Trimble Autosteer (plumbed in not ezsteer).


Was told to push it... well 200 HP rolling country no sloughs and full sections... I averaged 14.7 km/hr... spurts of up to 17 km an hr but you can overload the hydraulics doing that. Pushing their largest head in 50 canola...

I learnt a lot of nifty things about the Mac dons... even though we are agco for the most part... I'd love to own a mac don m150/155 or 205 windrower some day.

M150, 7 mph is fast enough, gets too busy. Swath laid gets worse with speed. At 11% on little farm, all wheat, another 4 times acres are less %. Biggest local has 8 combines lied up and ready, 3 M155's cutting 24 hours a day. They always get done with the rest of us. Size should not matter, 100's of combines on lots could be rented.

Agree them new mcdons cannot beat them. Oh well my 1000 hr jd with honey will have to do and its reliable if paid attention to. The honeybee was the better swather in its day. We are loading our knife to the max in the green wheat which is why it is sinking into swath its green. Even the canola is showing high running hydraulic pressure only 2 to300 psi off of kick out. Knife dulling so will change it out again after canola. Ok back to percent done . 0. But lots in swath. Canola just finishing up tomorrow then into wbeat or pes if they are ready. Long term looks good again. But hmmm seen that before and then before the better stuff gets here it has changed.
