Canola acres are half for 2015 on our farm

Should have 4 quarters. Will have 2.

    One invigor 261.
One dekalb (can't remember number now)

2 quarters going into prairie saphire flax.

12 bucks a bu contract on 20 bu an acre is profitable. Have grown 35 flax here easily before.

This year on our farm L252 out yielded L261 by 10 BPA. So far we've told them we are not buying their Canola seed for 2015.

I said the seed companies screwed with our Canola. Cost of seed was dollar a lb and we grew 50 to 40 now cost of seed is 66 with spray a acre and we grow 30 50. WTF. Neighbours that switched to Flax have a awesome year. Canola growers get the shaft again.
And the experts want Wheat and Barley to go the same way as Canola. Yea can you say the end of growing grain for a profit in Canada.

our 261 looks as good as better than our 252. 130 looks just as good as either seems to depend more on field than anything. All we have combined so far is 130 and i am very impressed with how well it took the stress this year.

I will stick to the rotation but won't be rushing in or tripping over myself and others to secure the "newest and best" variety with the highest price per pound costs anymore. I'm done playing that game.

If there were at least reasons, other than price gouging, for the increased seed costs I could live with it. Don't get me wrong, there's been improvements but at 5 to 6 times more money than it used to be? Did we get 5 to 6 times more value. You determine what constitutes value...

We're not fools, "what ever the market will bear". I am starting to resist...

Should add... 1 of synergy polish to that list as we rented another quarter.

We have 261 next to l130 and it looked way better more pods and stood better. Will have to find pic and post it

Already halved the canola this year. May have to halve the peas. And the hrsw. Flax may be an option if you can get a 12 dollar contract go for it. Guessing flax will be under pressure next year as the acres sky rocket. Canola will come back I hope. My cut worm seedtreatment did its job but costly not to use also no bare patches first time in many years. I tend to have more cut worms than the neighbours.

Sure would be nice if Jag could chime in here with a report on his OP Canola experiment.

We only planted L130. Stood well and it looks like there wasn't much there. Tall stalks with little branching and podding mostly at the top. It went about 45bu/ac., It was deceiving, but I was surprised and satisfied.

Looks like most canola packages are up around $2 an acre. Very disappointing. Thought they would have dropped the prices at least a little. Pretty sure their seed growers were paid less for seed this year then last year. Not sure what to do. Canola still pays the bills when you look at wheat and any feed price. Everyone can't grow flax. Mustard with our wet weather won't ripen and is full of weeds. My mustard fields look like I'm an organic farmer.

Just started combining the OP Canola.

It is all swathed and looking pretty good. Once we are finished combining it I will report back on how it did.

We have 3 quarters on some light land close to the Sandhills and we have 120 acres north of Prelate in some heavy clay.

Just got started combining in the lighter land on Friday and it rained again.
Hoping the weather is good for the next few weeks.
We have Prairie Sapphire Flax seeded again this year and it is looking really good. Wish we would have had more seeded in the place of Durum.
