    Mid Harrow or Heavy Harrow

We are planning to do some fall trash management for the first time ever. Some people say that a Mid Harrow is good enough to break up trash, others say you need a Heavy Harrow. What do you people use?

Heavy. The way they work best is they need to fill with straw and then smear the straw between its weight and the ground.

Heavy trash heavy harrow. Spring harrowing the mid harrow is just fine. It leaves a nicer field before seeding.

If you have never used a heavy harrow be wary of the horses needed when used properly.

We have a CaseIH 550 quad trac. Don't see power being an issue.

The "Eddy Match Co." makes a good one for real manageable trash. Just kidding we don't burn anything but flax straw and hate doing that too.

depending on your land you may want to look into vertical tillers also

I will say heavy harrow. Make sure it is a size you can pull fast enough. We find it's the speed that makes the difference.

So, how fast do you go? How do you set the tines?

Do we consider a moris a mid. It follows the soil better than anything else. Less action but i tend to like that. More even action. One pass is all I ever needed.

We go as fast as the field allows. I like the tines pretty vertical.

Just finished a field at 8-9 mph. Sprayer ruts from fungi time. Field before that was 11.5 mph because it was smooth.

Just make sure they are 9/16 not 5/8 tines

Anyone use the elmers heavy harrow. 2 extra rows of tines closer together. But the tines are thinner as well. Does it do a good job.

We use a Bourgault Mid harrow..Love it..way less power and fuel to pull..No need to till the soil, just break up straw..
