How much an acre is trucking then? Normal yields 1 to 2 tonnes per acre. Trucking $8-$12 a tonne. $16-$24 an acre alone for trucking. Don't see how you can do it cheaper then that. Are you counting $20 in $180?

Freewheat. Large tractors are where I put the most hours. Well over 500 hours. Seeding, vertical tillage, Harrowing and grain cart And yes the heated and air conditioned seat is very nice

Btw freewheat I agree with your numbers. After going through no crop last five years or more a guy keeps the pencil extremely sharp. Not everyone enjoyed record net farm income. I retooled in 10 won't be any new iron headed My way for quite some time. Wasn't the best decision in hind sight. Can be huge savings on fuel with conventional combines and mechanical drive sprayers. I like your rotation

Free wheat mentions canola is much more expensive to grow then cereals. Don't grow pulses so can't reply to that. When growing malt barley you have to use certified seed $15. Have wireworms so $4 a bus treatment is another $6-$8 Use axial for wild oats and prestige for broadleaf. Find in the long term this expensive chemicals give me the best return after rebates $27 (dont need to crop scout since there is no better chem I could use) including preburn. Normally need a fungicide in malt so $7. Seed and chem come to $55. Only $10 less then canola. Trucking costs are twice to 3 times the cost of trucking canola which actually more then offsets swathing costs. Have to swath barley too some years.

Our variable are around 100 an acre average and our fixed around 90.


Only equipment cost we have is repairs. Buy machinery under value or in the States.


Bought first air drill for 1800 got offered 2500 on trade

Bought a 22000 d****r head for 8 grand. Bought our new 56 ft drill with variable rate drives and openers for a grand some of 2500... It'll be worth that much as scrap steel.



Our sprayer is the only exception and we do custom work with it so it makes money. Same with the semi.

I grew up on a farm were land was poor and you had to make do with 40 bu oats 25 barley 10 flax.... you learn frugality.

Vvalk how much is trucking when you haul 200 km grab a back haul and get paid 21 a tonne for said back haul?

If you get paid $21 for a 200km trip then farmers custom trucking costs would be closer to $30 an acre alone. Those rates are 1.5 x higher ten that same haul in southern Alberta. Also in not in the commercial hauling business. Would have to run clear fuel and different insurance.

Let's all be a little more honest with ourselves. The number that matters is the one at the bottom of the income/expense sheet...divide it by your acre base and there's your number.
