Fall field work (SF3 & others too)

Hey SF3, what are you using to prep your fields for next growing season?

The onky thing we've done so far is heavy harrow, some pieces twice. Bad part is it only breaks up the stubble a bit more, spreads it around and still only leaves it on top. Some places the "thatch" is getting a bit thick. In a dry cycle it would be exactly what we need but there is no real lack of moisture here. I think these conditions are contributing to our disease pressure. If you're using vertical tillage, what is the field finish like? How deep does this thing penetrate(not that I'm looking to subsoil). Does it incorporate alot of the residue and how prone to water and wind erosion do you feel it leaves the field. We have spots that would benefit from some sort of tillage but others would be better left alone (within the same field). You going to do all of your acres if you can?

Lots of farmers spraying glyphosate on their stubble. This must be beneficial. Everybody is doing it.

Farm we use a Turbo max and it does a nice job once u have had a rain. Moisture seems to help with penetration and incorporation. We tried a Horsch Anderson Joker and it works excellent aswell. These machines can be high maintenance after a few years use. Especially if u have marginal land with rocks. Also need some hp for these machines. They work better at higher speeds.

Checking: Does "frontal lobotomy" translate to "not worrying about it"?

Up our way, the Hooter Mights, are putting down NH3 with their vertical tillage...in this case Salfords. They did some this spring to try it out, now that seems to be the way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Its kinda funny to see them travelling at 7 MPH applying amonia at the same time, but it must work as they are planning to do close to 20,000 acres like this.

Glyphosate pass, and a heavy harrow run.

That last operation really smoothed and tilled the fields. Not referring to the lobotomy one. That was for hobby!

42 foot chisel plow over all fields getting flax and canola. Edge on canola fields pea fields got gly and express sg plus a harrowing to spread straw

Oat fields get cultivated too if we have time so do wheat fields. They get 1l of gly and express pro.

I've heard it said that 'I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.'

After all, it is Saturday nite

The bottle in front of you helps ensure you won't need a frontal lobotomy if you farm for a living.
