Trade Retaliation

Just do not get it with retaliation being seen as a solution in trade agreement disputes.

For Canada, as a trading nation, better to lean towards free and open trade and reducing our own barriers rather than increasing them in response to actions like U.S. COOL legislation.

Our consumers and tax payers lose more than selected groups gain from retaliatory tariffs.

The US is wrong, and many in the states are asking their own government to change it.

The US has backed Canada into a corner, not sure they have any choice.

Bending over and continue taking it doesn't seem like the right choice.

The US is breaking the law with COOL so I hope we retaliate to send a message.

Premier Wall, Lyle Stewart and Ritz said they will consider retaliation.

They have already folded and failed on both files.

CN has said they are going to court.

After the first ruling on COOL they should have implemented retaliatory actions.


But cattle prices are up so they can cover their incompetence.

Railway issues have been ignored by focusing on the sale of the cwb.

Divide and conquer or bend over and take it. Same difference.

There is no doubt that old CWB was a trade irritant.
Heard it first hand from farmers in USA and Great Britain.
Canada's support for supply managed marketing boards is another one.
Have to question Ritz and Harper position on that one.

When in England a few years ago, took time to look for a farm once owned by great grandfather.
Was referred to a local farmer-historian who drove me around.
It was in an area that had bomber bases in World War Two and this man expressed gratitude to the Canadians who served and many who made supreme sacrifice.
He had opposite views on Canadian Wheat Board and thought it unfair competition.
Somewhat dismaying that other posters support retaliation and fighting back rather than negotiation as a way to avoid trade wars.

Negotiation is fine when both parties live up to what they said they were going to do. In the case of MCOOL, America did not. They were told by the WTO to fix it, and they made it worse. All the while stalling and extending the damage.

The tariffs are targeted at products produced in areas controlled by some of the most powerful elected officials. That's why it seems odd that some things are included.

The days for negotiation on this are long gone.
