We had less risk going with the bin run seed and the $40 acre savings on seed.

I was a bit nervous as I had over 600 acres seeded and I had people telling me I was crazy to seed it and the best thing I could do was put the seed into a hole and burn it.

I was not expecting it to yield as good as it did compared to the hybred varieties.
I was thinking of it as a total different crop type like mustard or something.

A nabour had some L150 that yielded 55 bu acre and it was all seeded on summerfollow.

I don't think the 46A76 would have the potential to yield 50 in our area but it is still profitable and we will most likely seed 400 to 500 acres of it again next year on some land where we will not seed lentils.

I am thinking of trying some L150 in 2015 as well and if we get the seed soon there could be some good $ savings.

What do you mean dollar savings?

Would be closer to $500 bag now and $600 in spring.

Have to agree on the clearfield Gust. WTF would you spray a group 2 on your canola when you are basically forced to use a group 2 for either grass or broadleaf control in your cereal year and pulse year if you grow pulses. RESISTANCE

But I also think these new seed rules are bullshit. Bottom line is there is no upside for farmers in the new seed rules. We are going to end up paying more wheat seed one way or another.

Some might call that way of thinking short sighted but in my business I don't willingly give extra money to a company in the hope they will provide me with a better product down the road. And I don't consider money that I pay to a seed company an Investment in that company because I have no equity in that company.

If the wheat seed developers want to extract royalties from their latest and greatest wheat varieties every year then why not have farmers who want to grow them sign a contract that relinquishes their right to save the seed? very simple no need for an entire revamp of the system.

            Gust its real simple.
We use to grow big yields in canola year in year out in the 70s 80s and 90s. Oh you weren't farming then. Ask your dad how his canola was doing in the 80s.
This isn't about the last 8 years, think and look at the long term in ag.
We farmers didn't gain anything in the Canola seed game but smoke and Mirrors.
L150 was the biggest dud to hit Canola and all we got is a hand shake for the F&*K up.
But their is Big money in the seed business for companies who sell Canola.
Yet you want wheat to go the same way.
Big yields happen now with our wheat new super varieties like you talk about will again be smoke and Mirror as our old are taken out of system.
But I hope to be out of ag before that shit show arrives.
When will farmers realize all the changes do them no F&*king good but everyone in the industry makes out like a bandit.
I agree with some we should all get some seed and do a side by side experiment and post. My good god I bet I know the out come.

Seems some think prior to hybrids, rr, gm, and Inigor, canola never yielded 40-50. Not true! And with less inputs, way less.

Next year I am seeding some of that thatcher wheat I always talk about. I would be willing to bet with todays agronomy, it will do just fine.

I think agronomy has led any perceived yield bumps, WAY more than any supposed seed benefits. In fact, I simply do not see the seed benefits. If I did, I should be getting 90 bushel hard red, 80 bushel canola, 150 bushel barley, what with all the "yield increase" from seed breeding.

But in reality, my yields have been stagnant.

Some areas, like Mr. Gusts' region, can thank higher rainfall and cooler summers for their perceived yield increases. IMO they can thank the weather and agronomy exclusively...

                Freewheat

I agree. If I had put the inputs to my crops 20 years ago like I do today, I would have been long retired.

Has nothing to do with newer better varieties.

Let's play phone a friend in Nipiwan or melfort or wadena or swan and ask to speak to their dad about yields before the new super crops!
                  Try it!

Bucket. On my farm, I call those years, "the lost" years. I was learning on my own how to farm. We had been having fantastic growing seasons through the 90's. Nitrogen was 20 odd cents a lb. as a small example. I grew some good crops, but they could have been SOOOOO much better, if I knew then what I know now about my soils, agronomy, and had I had a bit better machinery.

I kick myself to this day for not taking better advantage of the weather those days.

Maybe this thought is to conspiratorial but.....if i was the devil and making plants for a company why not design one that needs a bunch of fert to perform?

Do you guys that know what your doing sense anything like this?
