Farmaholic, in a conventional tillage system they still recommend for the avadex to be incorperated twice. In a zero til situation, the wild oats seed bank is on the soil surface or right near to it, so surface app is effective. Conventional till, the wild guys are throughout the soil tillage profile.

That is why recommendations change and why many studies these days recommend NO disturbance at all on fall applied product. At least in a zero till system.

Contrary to what klaus says. U dont need to harrow the granular avadex this fall. Just float it on with your potash or valmar it on alone, leave it til spring and then harrow it. Harrowing will warm soil and activate avadex as it warms up.

I used a lot in the 80's, and do remember that soil needs to be warm to activate. Treflan similar. Always had escapes in cold wet areas. Need to touch up with post emerge. But sure cleaned up wild oats for years.

Basically you need it in contact with dirt for it to work. You don't want it in the seed row so spreading in spring and then running the master over it would work the granules in too deep.

How much sense does that make?

I don't get why you wouldn't get that phoenix from horizon and be done with it... Wouldn't take much longer than just a valmar.

Cause that machine is non existent

And I am interested in what works. By the time the chem is comfirmed not working its too late Anyway so best to avoid in first place. Klause i am 49 years old. Only once in my life I had weed spray not work. Last year with fna's horizon equiv. Am doing pretty good. When times were tough I made it through a full 20 years of half rate of puma. Worked excellent for a full twenty years. I am more interested in what farmers are doing that works than what the agronomist can guarantee. Even yourself is using off label shit all the time. So you can understand.

Hopper and freewheat. Ya I remember that avadex was having the wild oats being controlled by the shoot growing through a tfeated layer and the other treflan product contolled weeds "germinating" in the treated layer (?????)

I would think there would be "stripping" with todays no till systems compared to the old intensive seeding methods (hoe/press drills and air seeders with harrow packers) that would mix more soil and leave a more even distribution of chemical. I'm not arguing it doesnt work but it seems to be one extreme method to another. It would a layer of dirt over it to work, wouldn't it? Low spots that have alot of residue is where wild oats usually are and how do you mix the chem properly if its simply spread on top then seeded into?

My fields will be planted straight up and down. Different than planting around sloughs. Low spots may be cool and chem slow to work. So spot spraying may be needed if planting early am thinking. Wild oats will also grow here under a double harrow opperation.. do like klause and get chem money back after the fact or

Did horizon get rid of that unit? Saw it sitting there last week and still on their site

Let me ask you this... we are wet and we will freeze hard. When all the water runs off with our drainage ditches where do ya think most of that chem will end up if you don't put it on dirt?

Do what you want but IMHO it's pissing money away...

Gowan won't guarantee any applications of these chems so forget getting money out of them if it doesn't work.

If your expecting full control with avadex your dreaming in the first place. We spray a post emerge regardless so expectations arent high when using pre emerge
