Prices are what they are wherever they are.

I like a simple life as much as possible. If a price fits my needs - profit, cash flow, etc I take it. If it doesn't, I leave it. Trying to unravel all the details of this vs that and oh no we're getting screwed, is too much work and drama.

I do like to know freight differentials because opportunities are there sometimes. But, I am far from understanding all of that side do this business.

I always want to know the basis.

Re pricing, Canadian bids here on px is $.04 per point after 13.5px.

12 cent difference between #1 and #2
20 cent deduction for .5% of protein.
A few days ago was $6.00 for #2, 13.0 or $6.20 for #2, 13.5.

Believe it has gone down about 10 cents.

The basis has changed from a minus 85 to a plus 20 per metric tonne which should indicate the graincos want to move wheat.

They don't and are not going to move wheat until weather gets shitty and then pull the same shit as last year.

By ritz rescinding the OIC they got the green light to **** farmers over again.

The WGEA is calling for the OIC to remain. Grain cos obviously don't trust the railways to not return to "Hunter Harrisonism".

But ritz's advisors the wcwga have told ritz to rescind the order.

And return to a market driven System that moves grain from Alberta and manitoba first.

The railways are not market driven. Unless you think by downloading millions of tonnes of freight to the public highway market driven.

Rutter said to wait until there is a hint of trouble. What would you call short lines being 1000s of cars late? Or deliveries months behind at some points?

I guess waiting until January makes more sense. And doing SFA until April.

CWB annual pool for #1, 13.5 is about $7.70.

Your handling fees will have to be deducted off there which will vary by location and company.

So how do those prices help the majority of Canadian farmers? What good does your link serve for Sk and Mb farmers?

Those price are in the USA why not Western Canada?

I posted to highlight that wildly fluctuating basis levels are a part of the US market as well as our own. I highlight in the Great Falls basis chart that DNS 14 (similar to a 1/2 CWRS 13.5) prices have varied from 50 cents per bushel to $1.15 over currently. That is before exchange rates and other things that impact Canadian basis levels with MGEX (referring directly to CWRS).

On the comment on cash prices, the Montana situation should be a guide to Southern Alberta and South Western Saskatchewan. South East Saskatchewan and Manitoba would have equivalent posted prices from North Dakota. Anybody south of the trans Canada should be tracking these prices and looking for alternatives.

To the question of whether we track US basis or cash to monitor performance of the system, I think spending time on cash prices is better investment of time. Perhaps a better measure for most of the prairies would be port prices. I use Portland prices. West coast prices would be nice.
