Urea Application /w Late Herbicide in HRS Wheat

I've seen some interesting numbers from melting urea into a liquid solution and applying it at a late (5-6 leaf) stage on wheat.

Was wondering if anyone on here has tried this? JdGreen? I think you did some right?

We apply our herbicides on HRS later than most since we rely on Express Pro for early control and think we could apply a shot of urea whilst doing this.

    Same as Kugler Fert.?

Not sure on the salt content and the water ratio to make it safe , but some have done it.

Did it a few years back. We just used an old liquid fert tank with cone bottom and circulated with a pump until u couldnt hear the fert rattling thru system then sprayed it out.
Cant say we saw a huge benefit but definitely cheaper than liquid n. Takes time to do this. Using a liquid tanker would be excellent as u can do a lot at one time.

You will loose interest in mixing urea in water on farm as you get a serious endothermic reaction. The water gets so cold the piping will get covered with ice.
Cold water won't dissolve much product.
The theory of late application of N to boost protein has cycled through many times over the years but never grew legs.

                    Good find Hopper.

I've met Mr. Dennison before. .. him and a Phil Needham have a lot in common in wheat management and it's what we go after. Managing plant stands timing nutrient app with uptake. Using growth regulators.

The reason I brought up melting urea was because it would add another 10 lbs at a critical time without another trip over the field...

Wasted 2 days of my life this summer. Can't get them back. Would have had way more fun on the river with the kids and probably saved money. I saw very little if anything with 7# N. Spent a day melting 10mt in 8000usg of water. Applied with folicur at mid flag. Burnt the tips of the flags a little. No protein difference and no yield bump. I will put my big boy pants on and just hammer it all down at seeding this year . Will run a blend of 46, Super U, ESN, and chicken shit, if that's what it takes to get more time with the family/friends on the lakes.

Boys I think we gave a winner!
Our protein is consistent year in year out over 13.5! Using amonia in band and starter Fert! We're canada short season! Can't change that! South Dakota south is long season and Europe is longer season!
If you have only 105 days you can't make a mistake!

That is a big part of it, SF3. We are not Europe or in a soft winter wheat zone of the US. Our practices are going to reflect that. Now, not saying don't try it. But we do not have 150 to 170 days and consistent growing conditions to get those wild yields.

Agree 100 percent with the last 3 posts. top dressing is a timing nightmare it will cost you big time on a year when you cant get your timing right. Seeding is by far the most efficient time to apply all your fert but you need to be set up for it.

Depends on the type of top dressing - time it with herbicide and fungicide - no time lost and you are out there anyway. There is a benifit in alot of situations. Reduced herbicide damage on crop and increased weed control are two we seen this year, plus yeild and small protien gains in most cases .
All are correct on growing season here and abroad, it is short here and time restrictive as is the optimum seeding window - a lot of feed / frozen wheat here from late seeding . Probably 50% to do with weather and 50% to do with time management . Top dressing can help with the later 50%
