    Interesting.

Furrow will you have trials again this yr? Would love to come see em if you do.

I was scrolling through wheat pics from this year's crop... I'm really thinking the top dressing after thr big rain event helped us with fuzz... I mean all cereals yellowed and looked sick... took weeks to get back to normal. We top dressed with 28 and within 10 days the crop looked dark and healthy again.

Yup we will do a series of different rates again with herbicide as well as a fungicide trial with different fungicides at heading like we did this year.
The best net returns this past year were from the two shot foliar with mid fertility at seeding. In general the 2 shots of foliar gave the same results as 30-35lbs N either top dressed or seed placed. So if your target is 100 lbs N total start at 60n at or before seeding then go in with the two shots foliar - herbicide and then fungicide(we used 70% rate fungicide with excellent results).
If your crop does not need fungicide (lack of rain, hail) or if tissue tests are sufficient at boot/budding, you may not need the second shot, or less of it - 2 lt instead of 6 lt.
Our plots and customers with high fertility at seeding (100-120 lbs N) and then added either foliar, top dressed 28-0-0 or dry seen very little response from any extra fertility of any form in this area this past year.
Most likely a function of disease levels in dense crops capping off full yield potential, as Ado has mentioned and many others have seen this year.

Not to be a party pooper but from what I've seen a lb is a lb but different. Soil applied N went more to straw this year so the foliar N stood better and had less disease. That said when back casting with the WAG model the yield matched up exactly to the actual #'s of N in the Kugler on the three fields I sampled...still haven't pulled my own data. I was aiming for 110# and did 90 plus Kugler but it might have been too much N to start. You NEED to start with a good soil test and a good agronomist to interpret it and go from there. My recommendations this year will be optimum N less 10-15 bpa, that N number will be the soil applied N. For those of you doing your own math the last few bushels of a reasonable yield goal will be about 1.25#/ac of N/bu for wheat and 1.5-1.75 for Canola.
