In this area every acre is drained. Government sanctioned c and d ditches run everywhere. We pay into them in our rm taxes.


All this water heads north east and ends up in Hudson Bay.

C and D ditches at Lewvan/Riceton? Goes to Souris and then Red River to Hudson Bay after the city of Minot strains it through their houses.

Far as I know that yearly levy allows ditching to the projects. Never heard otherwise. If you couldn't drain your land, why would you want to pay the annual levy?

I am a C&D board member. The direct acres, land that the ditch runs through are NOT required to have permits. Land that drains through other land to get to the C&D ditch definitely requires a permit. You could be paying a levy but that does not mean drain all you can by what ever deep a ditch it takes. Most C&D works were constructed decades ago and were NOT anticipating massive additional waters from miles away by track hoes and deep cuts. They ALL require approval from the local C&D board before ANY construction is started. We locally are swamped by water being added to 70 year old ditches. It will have to be stopped and reversed in some cases. Those areas were never meant to be added. Capacity downstream is NOT unlimited. Some one is impacted, downstream and in Manitoba before it gets to Hudson Bay. I feel a change in policy/laws is long over due, provincial WSA is in the process of drawing up new legislation. Some ditches will be closed.

We farm very rolly land here... You need a trackhoe to ditch a slough from 300 yards away from the C&D to the ditch...

Our C&D ditches are up to 15' deep in places here. Amazing projects back in their day.


I agree with what fjlip is saying... The prairies are getting wetter and we need more and better infrastructure.... Imagine tile draining Sask/MB like most of Illinois/Iowa. If land values and the value of the crops produced keeps climbing it'll make more and more sense to tile.
