I didn't post any "before" pictures just the clean sample and the screenings. I realize there are still issues but I am hoping by cleaning it it can at least be "worked with". The protein is about 15% in the uncleaned sample. Clean out is heavy but the fusarium count was anywhere from 10-14% depending who picked it. If it wasn't for the high price for durum this exercise would be futile. I won't be cleaning my spring wheat because the fusarium is too low(but still to high) and the spreads in grade prices wouldn't justify it.

what machines are you using to clean with. I ask because my durum is in same boat with the fuzz levels being 8-9% at one elevator and 10-12% at the family owned elevator. Regardless I have to clean to get any value out of this stuff.

He's using an screener that isn't doing much and a gravity table which is doing all the heavy lifting. No indents or colour sorting.

What are doing with the screenings?

Sending them to tom to sell as seed?

Just funning. Don't rake that last question other than some morning humour.

A couple of tough questions I didn't want to answer. Early indications has the clean out at about 20%(OUCH). But what the hell do I do with it otherwise. I will be approaching some poultry feeding operations about the screenings, remember I said there is 15%px in the grain. If Tom wants them I'll give him a deal(I hear Alta is working on lowering the Fusarium tolerances in planting seed anyway!!, perfect isn't workable)

What we're doing is a dramatic improvement but it still isn't "perfect".

Any suggestions?

I am just curious that's all.

My durum is gone. Lucky for me I sold my 3 for 6.50. My choice. I have a talk every morning with my marketing guy while I look in the mirror.

I had contracts I had to fill and the yield wasn't great. But I never thought the entire southern sask durum crop would be ****ed that bad.

The good news is our customers will accept a 3 cwad and pay more for it. That's a positive development.

I'd get a grain furnace and heat my shop/house for free with the screenings.


Or sell it to somebody as heat fuel. That stuff looks toxic

Another humid July and wheat is a dead horse till resistance. Very sad looking samples. Farmer risk in our faces, "mother nature" at her worst! Free heat sounds like the best option, sure need "heat" this morn.

Yes Klause, it likely is toxic, just like my personality. I will be exploring all options for the screenings yet I know I am severely limited regarding my options.

If someone wants it for grain burning stoves, at least it isn't tough/damp and won't burn. LOL

Did you do a vomi test before and after? I would be really interested in knowing that. I'm hearing guys cleaning durum and spring wheat but the vomi isn't going down much after cleaning. That's just what I have heard.

It is a concern of mine. But its amazing how the rules can bend if need be. Some years maltsters will accept sub par barley for malt.

I think the tolerance levels are a farce.

Alberta will find out soon if we don't get into a drier cycle soon. Mother Nature, knows no, and respects no boundries/borders.

If there is a need for half decent durum with good
falling numbers and protein, I hope to find a home for this, it should be blendable. If not, it may stay home and find it's way into the market in the coming years.
