CWB Privatization Dilemma

Does anyone see a potential problem with the fact that if the Conservatives lose the next Federal election things may turn out different than they planned.

With the Government appointed BOD, what do you want to bet there is a lot of closed door/behind the scenes meetings. I say this "plan" is going to get fast tracked so they can get the final nails driven into the coffin and it buried extra deep so there is no chance of the Old CWB being exhumed or rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of it's former self.

With the exchange in the House of Commons today between NDP's Malcolm Allen and Pat Martin and Conservative's Gerry Ritz you got to bet there are rumblings that something is happening. Where there is smoke, something is smoldering... Stay tuned, something is about to start fire.

The NDP/left has milked agriculture dry. They are a friend of the farmer only when it suits/supports their cause.

Cotton, I remember you talking about the brokerage idea long before the passage of Bill C18. I am on the record saying it wasn't all bad and there should have been some value salvaged. I'm not saying implementing an open was the wrong thing to do but it was poorly thought through and done in haste. I don't think ANY of the players were ready for what was about to unfold. Enter today's marketing and logistics cluster****.

Could you imagine the outcry if a political party campaigned to end universal healthcare. Then one day announced it was ending and threw open the flood gates. Could you imagine the chaos that would ensue. Why do we need central regulated health care? Doesn't, or shouldn't, free market capitalism apply to everything in a free country?

Cotton, Ideology will not allow it. Some people are so narrow minded they could look through a key hole with both eyes. Let's see what they do with it then we can judge their true intentions. I doubt it will be a brokerage under the current Parliamentary Regime. I doubt the Producers will have or be offered any stake in it. I doubt any procedes from the sale of it will see its way back to Producers. I doubt it will be given away (please explain your position on this bucket).

I don't really understand what they would do as a broker. Broker from farmers to grain cos? Broker to destination markets? In many cases the CWB wasn't selling to the end user they were selling to grain companies who made the sales to destination markets to begin with. I just am not sure what they could gain for farmers with their overhead compared to the average export broker who has a laptop and a cell phone.

Open market worked very well for the 12 crop. I don't know anyone that wasn't happy. 13 was a mess but would have been a even bigger mess with demurrage hidden in the pools had the old CWB been in place.

Dave, instead of it being a hidden pool deduction it became an increase in country elevator basis. Bottom line is Producers paid for it either way. Sad part is under either system two of the three major parties(Producers, Country Elevators and RRs) I doubt felt any reprecussions if they were responsible for causing the demurrage. How the hell does that work? Thats a pretty sweet deal if I can get someone else to pay for my mistakes. Where do I sign up?

If you bid 200 million for the cwb the proceeds go into the company's bank account that you just bought. The winning bidder has that 200 million to use. If they turn around and sell it the next year for 500 million there is then 700 million to current purchaser.

The government is giving it away.

And since there is no public accounting of the current cwb it's hard to think otherwise.

Listen to nonsense in question period something should be announced soon. My guess is the deal is done already. They will wait for the break to announce the new member of the graincos tea.
