We just came through a period of high oil prices where the oil industry taxed every consumer with an amount of excess profit much higher than a proposed carbon tax. Essentially a transfer of wealth from consumers to oil companies, especially state owned Saudi Arabia where the cost of production is very low.

Properly designed a carbon tax would be revenue neutral. Decreases in income tax would offset the increases in taxes on energy. Energy is already taxed extensively by provincial and federal governments.

Harper and the oil industry have brainwashed so many with their carbon tax scare mongering.

Andrew Nikoforuk sums it up well, we have not had an adult conversation about energy policy in this country!

Norway has a trillion dollars set aside from oil compared to Alberta's $17 billion!! Norway has a higher standard of living and will continue to prosper once the oil runs out. But not Alberta. Party now, hangover later!

Alberta runs a deficit during the best times in the oil patch and now will cut spending instead of using a more sensible approach of raising a sustainable sales tax to fund health and education.

Seabass, the emissions technology is crap because many north american companies can't engineer shit. Trucker just told me Mercedes/Detroit engines were redesigned to accomplish reduced emissions, rather than cummins or cat who just tried to add it on to existing engines. I am not sure he is right, but the goal of emissions controls is to clean up pollution of all types. North America has been behind on this and is playing catch up.

And besides what you paid for DEF and emmissions control pales in comparison to the high fuel prices of the last few years.

I have followed lots of trucks choking on their shitty exhaust. If you didn't know diesel smoke is a carcinogen. Or perhaps you don't mind a few extra cancer deaths because of shitty air?
