Why has canola been priced at a discount to soy? Ya we had a large crop last year but it was much smaller this year.
Same with good HRSW - here in western Canada we should be at a premium to Minni wheat - no?

        Furrow,

Without getting out my calculator, I believe canola is undervalued to soybean because of the meal/oil ratio. Meal demand has been strong and soy has more meal than canola. I'm sure Charlie can expand but I've got to get back to the shop. We need more flooding in Malaysia.

Hamloc You may be right but it is farmers that make decisions on what to grow on their land. Are you asking an industry organization or government or some other signals either via crop insurance that require set best management practices or industry driven sustainability contracts that mandate crop rotations?

70 % ish of the value of canola comes from vegetable oil. 70 % ish of soybean value comes from meal. Meal is the everyready bunny. Soybean oil the tortoise.

COPA weekly report is worth looking at:

No I am not interested in more regulations. I was thinking of the Canola council changing it recommendations on minimum canola rotation going from 3 years to two. It wasn't an agronomist that suggested this I am sure. It was the members of the council who are connected to seed companies. Purely self interest.

The industry which is made up of LDM Richardson and Bungy plus Cargill all sell seed all but seed and also sell spray! Over charge at the front and pay shit all at the finish! They are the ones who screwed canola all the way down to becoming the Retarded sister! And Charlie peas great all summer saying its a shitty pea crop shortage of peas! But no the price in fall is low low low! Then when harvest is done boom peas are short and price goes to 8!
We need a better tracking system! What we have now is useless!

Most growers go along with present canola variety and seed system.
They complain a lot but do not hear them say they would put more money into check offs.
Smart ones likely put money into international companies that are well managed.
Critics are more believable when prepared to spend their own money.
Does not stop them from becoming part of perceived problem when they make money and sell out as with farmer owned graincos.

If enough of us farmers were really concerned, we could invest in an entity to provide competition and bring down seed price. Should help all the other growers who saved their money and went along for the free ride.
                    Can't see it happening.

Alberta grew 1.3 MMT of field peas the 2013 and 2014. Western Canada exports to China have grown to 1 MMT. Acres follow disappearance/markets and price. The best solution to better canola rotations is profitability in other crops.

Soy oil profile is improving all the time. Wont be long before its quality is same as canola. Maybe then it can be renamed ****seed, and used for niche markets like jet fuel and lubricants LOL. Stick a fork in it, the party may becoming to an end.
