    SK CROP REPORT - SEPT 23

    Harvest over 50% complete - Red Spring Wheat Deteriorates further

    Farmers have combined 47% of the 2002 crop with an additional 11% put to alternative uses
    Harvest remains behind the 5-year average of 79%
    50% of the Red Spring wheat has been combined and 9% is expected to grade #1 CWRS - down 4% from last week and down from the 10-year average of 52%
    Cool, wet weather, towards the end of the week again stalled harvest
    Crop quality continues to be downgraded due to weathering, bleaching, staining and sprouting
    85% of the crop reporters rate the pastures as fair to good
    A frost reported on September 21 and 22 likely damaged immature crops

    Southern Saskatchewan (Crop Districts 1-4)

    Generally warm and dry at the beginning of the week but turned wet and cold on the weekend
    An average of 4mm of rain fell; high - 11mm; low - nil
    Wind damage was reported across the entire region
    Combine completion is now at 61%, up from last week's 37%
    60% of the south's red spring crop is in the bin; 13% is expected to grade #1 CWRS
    Grasshoppers continue to damage crops
    Pasture conditions remain in fair to good condition

    Central Saskatchewan (Crop Disticts 5-7)

    The week started warm and dry and then turned cold and wet. Snow and sleet was reported
    An average of 2mm of rain fell; high - 5mm
    Wind and frost damage was reported with shelling of grain and rolling of swaths
    Combine completion is now at 45%, up from last week's 28%
    50% of the red spring wheat is harvested; 9% is expected to make #1 CWRS, down from last week
    Grasshoppers and sawflies continue to damage crops
    Pasture conditions are in fair to good condition

    Northern Saskatchewan ( Crop Districts 8-9)

    An average of 2mm of rain on the week; high - 4mm
    Frost was reported across the region and is expected to cause damage
    Wind and hail damage was reported in some areas
    Combining is 30% complete, up from 23% last week
    42% of the red spring wheat crop is combined; 3% is expected to grade #1 CWRS
    Grasshoppers, sawflies, aphids, and disease caused damage this past week
    Pasture conditions are fair to food
