Good question, you would think others in the area would want to know so they can take proper precautions.

Reminds me of Triffid flax. Protect the seed growers.

That would mean someone would have to accept resposibility.

I smell another charge coming to farmers to have all production tested at our expense and be liable if it gets into marketplace.

IE: Declaration of class of wheat and triffid free flax.

            The latest info:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed the presence of Verticillium longisporum — a verticillium wilt pathogen — in a single plot at an undisclosed crop research location in the province.

            Still no location revealed.

I think grain growers have a right to know who brought this pathogen in and where it is so we can take appropriate measures to protect ourselves.

Ok my experience with clubroot has some merit here. I have one of the two cases found in Sask. Here's the history, I rent the land from the landowner. He actively farmed until 2010, he had rented 20 acres to Cargill for a blackleg nursery, they paid him enough rent to justify it. He quit farming and I rented his land, in 2011 they are doing their "research" sending summer students out to clip and pull stems to look for blackleg infection etc. Well someone started looking and found a gall on a root. So first thing that happens is they get it dna tested and they have a positive for clubroot. The pricks call me up and tell me that they have a test result that shows positive for clubroot as they thought I should know. I said show me the test results, they wouldnt. Couple weeks later they call me again and suggest that to deal with this issue I should notify Sask Ag. I said I had no proof of the positive so I wouldnt be doing anything. They called quite a bit through the fall of 11 to try and "contain" the issue. Their suggestion for me to contact Sask Ag was an attempt to get me to take the blame as they wanted to distance themselves of the issue. Eventually they contacted Sask Ag and the local RM and the news releases were made. After doing some research their equipment had been on tour throughout western Canada up until they implemented a protocol for disinfecting. Im not sure what all that involves, but didnt look intensive when I saw them unloading and reloading tractor etc. They might have done this back at the shop idk. But if the person who has this case of this disease or anything else that happens to be found in the future is looking for advice, deny EVERYTHING. Dont let the co talk you into signing or talking. Make them show you proof or what they claim and by all means if there are people on here that rent land to companies for research you might want to reconsider what allowing them access to YOUR land is opening yourself up to. Why do they rent land? Why not own land to do this research on? They dont want the liability. Just my two cents.

Could you imagine if say "Brucellosis" showed up in someones cow herd. That farm would be shut down. Be all over the news and a full public inquiry into origin etc.

Maybe people dont view a crop as a living breathing thing. They can't see it suffer but only see the end result of what ever infection its suffering from. In it's growth stage of it's lifecycle it is stationary, and doesn't make a noise. It just suffers with symptoms in silence with only visual affects....not enough human qualitites.
