SF3, first, I know an AAFC analyst. They don't care what you grow. They don't promote any crop. They only analyze and report as they see it.

Re the canola industry, do you think the industry developed this extensively because input suppliers and seed companies said lets get farmers on our hook? Or, did farmers start growing more and more canola because it was probably the only mainstream crop that offered the chance to make money,especially in the CWB era. Then, did the companies ramp up their investment in research and development of varieties and tech?

The industry is there because farmers wanted to go there.

There is nothing to prove that a 10 dollar per pound canola seed is 5 times better than a 2 dollar per pound seed.

It's just weather is better and farmers agronomy is different.

It's been a cash cow for everyone but farmers. Farmers still only get 10 bucks a bushel for selling it.

Seed on the other hand, on a per bushel basis, has went from 100 dollars to 500 or more.

Just for once people have to think in wider terms. In other words take the blinders off.

the canola industry is no different than the machinery industry. Lots of money feeds research, marketing, sales and outrageous options that go way beyond what is required.

By the looks of your current seeding intentions SF3, you mostly agree with the experts.
Some of the more efficient guys around here are going with a near mono crop system.
Two crops only.

I am not sure braveheart. Canola was the cinderella crop and profits may have been taken away. In the past we here grew as much canola as possible. Then rr and ll allowed us to grow more tighter rotations. Newer varieties kept the tighter rotations. Canola was a hit cause it makes so many seeds per plant. We should not allow wheat et al the same as canola cause then we will be spending 100 per acre on seed across the board.

Also brave its all global. We need to keep up with everyone. Why do we pay the lions share?

Remember when brazil and argentina outlawed gmo but grew it anyway. Now a lot of our canola is multiplied everywhere but here, on kauai our seed supliers would get the boot if they did not pay out the hawaii govt. Probably costs us a couple dollars per lb. But we pay it.

The canola companies ramped up investment after seeing the success of Bayer selling out year after year and cranking seed prices accordingly - they all followed suit after that. We farmers tipped our hat 15 years ago. Was it better ?? We had to have it at any cost and the market responded. Every seed company followed Bayer's footsteps - full tilt, good bad or otherwise.

And they are in kauai whose residents all want to burn the crops before spraying season. How good is all that?
