    Week 28 grain hopper transportation

The Ag Transport Coalition released the railway performance measurement update for Grain Week 28 today (attached). The report covers 90% of grain traffic in Canada.

The weekly report details railway performance across a range of key indicators including rail car demand, railway car supply, timeliness of railway car supply in response to weekly customer orders, unfulfilled shipper demand, corridor performance, railway dwell times at origin and railway dwell times at destination. Past weekly reports can be found on the Ag Transport Coalition website www.agtransportcoalition.com

Key figures from Grain Week 28:

    - In Grain Week 28 CN and CP supplied 2,111 (29%) of the 7,304 hopper cars ordered for delivery in Grain Week 28 representing a shortfall of 5,193 cars for Grain Week 28 orders.
o This was a 3% or 687 car drop in supply from Grain week 27
    - In the crop year to date, railways have supplied 43% of customer orders in the week for which cars were ordered. Unfulfilled orders have levelled off at about 10% of total shipper demand in recent weeks indicating that the system is not making up ground for prior week shortfalls.
    - In the crop year to date, 34% of all bulk grain shipments have waited for more than 48 hours at origin for pick up by the railways after being released by shippers for movement to destination.
o Only 28% of shipments were picked up within 24 hours.
    - Through the first 28 weeks of the current crop year, railways have failed to supply 22,884 hopper cars ordered by shippers. This represents a shortfall equivalent to 11% of shipper demand.

Ag Transport Coalition members look forward to advancing discussions with Government and collaboration with the railways on next steps to ensure that the rail transportation system is meeting the needs of Canadian businesses, contributing to their competitiveness and supporting economic growth throughout Canada.

Is 7304 a realistic number of cars to order?
    X = total # of cars
    - X = number of cars at ports (mills)
    - X = number of loaded cars in trans
    - X = number of empties in trans
What is the real # of cars available to be ordered?

    Just asking.

Is it up to farmers to find the supply of cars?

It seems when farmers tried to own or manage the cars, they were shit on.

The order to move grain last year stipulated about 11,000 cars per week of grain and grain products.
        7304 should have been doable?

Perhaps a sign that the Grain Companies are doing a dismal job of selling? Or managing inventory? Coordinating logistics from farm to ship?
          Need more information...

Has to be something to logistics when you end up with 20 boats anchored at vancouver.

They don't just say hey let's go hang around near vancouver and wait for a load. There are better climates to enjoy.

Shouldn't Grain Farmers be sick and tired of being BULLIED by the RR's, are we going to 'Shut up and be Quiet'... take it any more?

SHouldn't there be a zero tolerance, for we the Canadian people; for a bullied by Railroads... to send what? 171 bullies to Parliament hill... to beat up on grain farmers because... the Railway's profits are too low...?

Some will say... that Hunter Harrison is just doing what he does best... doing what he is being paid very well to do... Make Money.

When a school yard bully does what he does best... what do we say?

50 years ago... children are just experiencing life's rocky side... and should be happy someone is teaching them a lesson!

              Now 'ZERO TOLERANCE."

22,000 unfilled grain car orders...can speak for themselves. What were the unfilled hopper car orders last year at this time?

When are you going to start including graincos in your rants. Their not innocent either.

And why are they not making noise?

It seems all costs are being pushed to farmers due to someone else's incompetence.

Railways get their rubber stamped increases in the freight rate which is somewhat regulated. Graincos do what the heck they want all day long with no oversight. And send the bill to farmers.

Last year graincos asked farmers to phone their MPs. Why are the graincos not calling this year?

Because they found the golden goose.

                  Bucket,

Our grain companies have been telling to call our MP's/

You said "And why are they not making noise?"

If you really needed grain shipping... and really really needed trains... BAD... would you reasonably expect a rational grain company leadership team... to make serious waves... more than what has been done... alerting everyone we are over 22,000 hopper cars short of a full load!!! At 80t per hopper... that is short 1,760,000 t of a full load.

                    Bucket;

Who exactly... is not in this Week 28 report on grain shipping???

                    FYI;

Now we will easily be 23,000 cars short... and they say 90t per car can be shipped...

                      This

                      Is

TWO MILLION TONNES short... on shipping confirmed orders.

If you were an end user... needed western Canadian grain for your plant of Factory... trying to keep the food stores supplied...

Wouldn't you call this 'UNRELIABLE and UNACCEPTABLE' grain logistical service???

Sure but why are farmers picking up the tab while Glencoe makes huge profits on their grain side?

The rest of the families don't have to report.

Who do you think is dropping the ball?
                        1. Farmers
                        2. Graincos
                        3. Railways
                        4. Regulators/government

                          Bucket,

                          Sorry,

I apologize for these posts about the railways.

I should not have critical of the railroads. Please forgive me.

I know I have dropped the ball... cost my family a great deal of money and pain.

                            And recked things for you.

                            Sorry.

I think the railway management is a big part of the problem.

I wouldn't blame farmers. It's the other three.

Mine were questions. There is enough blame for the other three.

One thing I noticed today. It's rare to see potash cars with graffiti on them. Anyone wonder why? Grain cars are works of art.
