Wako... glad to hear you know you won't have quality issues, I don't think I would dare take the chance given there is probably a 90% chance I'll deliver off spec with the chances of fusarium and other weathering problems.

But if the "premium"(forward contract) for signing the contract is big enough, quality adjustments may not hurt so much.

How do you manage that risk?

Farming always a gamble, I got little less for my wheat this year because of lower protein, I have aeration so I will do wheat at 20 and yes might have fus after spraying 3 times but sometimes can mix with other farmers grain .

What's your falling number for your wheat? Big degrading factor this year.

Falling numbers are definely a factor this year here in SW Manitoba. Below 300 is not finding a market as easily as more sound wheat. Bids are also affected by the falling numbers.

Stonepicker. Low falling numbers are an indication of enzyme activity that occurs when the kernels begin(or have) germinated(sprouted). Results from wet/damp harvest weather.

Can someone give a more technical explanation?

Is it still possible to have high protien and a low falling number at the same time or is the protien converted to starch by the enzymes that result in
the low falling number, thereby reducing then protien as well?

Farmaholic, good explanation. I believe protein should be unaffected in low falling number wheat.

Wakopa, your target that was hit, was that futures only? How far out? Deferred to 2016?
