Saskatchewan Stops Pension Funds From Buying Farmland!

Saskatchewan Stops Pension Funds From Buying Farmland
Saskatchewan is clamping down on the sale of the province’s farmland to major Canadian pension funds and institutional investors, restricting deep-pocketed groups at a time when land prices are climbing, reports the Globe and Mail.
Ag Minister Lyle Stewart said Monday that Saskatchewan will undertake a review of provincial farmland ownership rules. In the meantime, pension plans, administrators of pension fund assets and trusts will not be allowed to purchase land, adding to the already stringent rules in place to prevent foreign investors from profiting from the industry.
"Our goal is not to limit investment, but to ensure the long-term success of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry and economy,” said Mr. Stewart in a statement. More details about the government’s review and consultation process will be released later this spring. “We want to hear from producers and other interested Saskatchewan residents,” Stewart said.
Ok this I like. See when your a farmer you take pride in ownership each piece you purchase is part of a puzzle. If a quarter in your puzzle that your missing comes up for sale you bid and hope to get. If you don't its no big deal just something to talk about the one that got away. But if its purchased by the Canada Pension plan at top of the market why the hell would any one want this in their back yard. Really go to your accountant and talk about selling out your farm ask him how much fed money you will have to send to Ottawa then think real hard how some of that money is being spent back in Saskatchewan buying out your neighbour that you bid on. Now again tell me how this is such a wise decision.
Stop the pension funds from buying property.
I can compete against the One earths, the Broad acres and all others. Bring on Farmers from South Africa who want to farm. They move in to your community and become part of it. That's farming not Foreign pension funds or fed money buying land. Funny the Guy who bought by us and became a new Canadian has lived the last 7 months back home. Yea he really is Canadian. HINT WINK WINK.

If stewart was doing his job it wouldn't have been allowed in the first place.

I think it might be a tough thing to stop.

Or he has let enough deals go thru to ensure a board seat somewhere.

Isn't wartman on the maxcrop board?

    They all get rewarded.

Stewart should get tough on the railways and graincos that just wrecked highway 42 with a railway running parallel 100 feet off the highway - eyebrow to moose jaw.

    Travel not recommended.

        Tweety

        You would think.

The railways haven't spent 12 million on that spur in 40 years. Highways will spend over 30 million rebuilding 42 in the next 5 years.

They are at 11 million for 20 kms already.

Our province with few taxpayers and lots of beat to death roads is a disaster in the making.

Tweety, I agree its a disaster in the making, but the average working taxpayer does not see it. He/she sees the conditions of the highway, but wants that fixed.
About 8 years ago CTR closed a branch line from Denholm to Meadow Lake. I was describing the efficiency of rail freight one day to a school teacher and his rebuttal was the majority of people use highways, when you rebuild a highway the average taxpayer sees, and drives on those tangible results. Happy.
Who cares about a bunch of bulk freight on rail, and less stress on highways.

The young guys are buying tractors that have tires on them worth more than my whole tractor is. Am I suppose to sell for less than market price to them cause that is all they can now pencil out. Markets of any kind have a way of working themselves out and finding true value as long as politicians stay away .

This topic was started as foreign land ownership and somehow turned to highways and the railroad. WTF. Foreign land ownership. The Govt is doing the right thing by putting a stop to it. Guy in our part of the country that owns 36 qtrs and lives in Cork Ireland. About 75 years old. again WTF.

We should never have had to compete for land ownership from their pension fund untaxed dollars paying for it while we buy it with tax payed money. Depending on the curcumstance my math says we were at a 20 to 30% disadvantage in some.

Nothing is stopping people from pulling their pension to buy land either. If they want to own land, that option is still available.
