Well what a week of fun. Wind and wind and then more wind. Ah farming in the heartland. Almost makes a farmer skip with excitement as for the first time in about 8 years we seem (fingers and eyes crossed) to have a normal spring. No crocus yet or green grass but a plus2 C soil with mud and still snow in the back roads and fence lines but she is going. The run off is still going but slowing.
Not one soul is out working in the field except the water pumps. No Kelly harrow or lemkin or dt. But the snow geese are back in droves.
Only tractors in the field are guys cleaning up the last of their grain bags as some rail movement is picking up. Some.
Still lots of land that might not get seeded as costs have not come down and its a Mexican standoff with Foreign owners (your not Canadian if you live 8 to 9 months back home. You simply have a job their live their and have 4 months holiday in Canada each year).
They want 55 to 60 I'm in the mood for 35 to 40 since they had a super renter who was the top producer in the area with big equipment and lots of men but forgot to pay for last year and a half. Good choice.
Seeding intentions in our area are like a bunch of darts with each crop and ones closer to the centre are what you grow. Every one has lots cleaned just haven't decided what to grow. One note some Companies are now hinting their maybe is way more Canola seed available because farmers aren't taking or booking seed. Some are as much as 35% to 40% below last year for canola seed sales. Ah but its going to be yellow from one end to the other Bullshit.
Flax and peas will be the crop of choice in our area. Sad but true.
Only thing with the strong winds no burning will be taking place as a fire will get out of control fast. Some flax from last year still needs to be burned and combined, plus some oats which the geese seem to have found.
So again to sum up the week its finally drying out, were finally getting grain movement (study long enough problem goes away) Water pumps are going hard and roads cut or water cut a path either way water is still flowing. Birds are back and maybe just maybe if it keeps up we will be in the fields in two weeks. Hope the pattern holds.
