As you would expect, the truckers and the shippers are at opposite sides of this discussion. The truckers want a guaranteed minimum rate and the shippers say the freight rate should be based on supply and demand. For example, the truckers contend that to cover their cost from the city of Sarandi in Rio Grande do Sul to the Port of Rio Grande, which is a distance of 606 kilometers, they need a rate of R$ 103.83 per ton. For a cargo of 31 tons, the charge would be R$ 3,218. The truckers want these type of minimum rates established for the different regions of the country.


Brazil truckers threatenning to strike again if they dont get higher min rates. R 103.83 per ton works to 41.53 cad per ton. Diesel Fuel price average for past 3months in brazil was 1.08 cad per liter. Not sure what their toll charges are.

Cost? Who cares what it costs. You only care about what the market can bear. Just like everyone else. I'd pad the hell out of my costs if you actually asked me. Take a page out of the fertilizer book.

Yeah a strike would be bad for them. I have seen long haul freight rates stupid low however and wonder why these guys are cutting each others throat. I was getting loads hauled from Manitoba to Texas for CAD$1000. That doesn't cover fuel. Grain haulers don't work locally for free here though. I could buy a very nice used semi tractor and throw the old one away every year for what I would pay in grain freight. I don't know why every farmer doesn't own their own rig.

That's almost exactly what I ship my azukis, last fall I paid $22 on a back haul and $31-33 on a one way haul. Not sure how the 401 or Toronto traffic compare to Brazil.
