Well its that time of the week again. Sask Ag is giddy with excitement that farmers are seeding all over Saskatchewan. Ok not really but man their happy.
Small snow storm last week got some of Sask and then a bit of rain to quite a bit.
We lucked out and missed the rain event, but as far as the seeding question, last nights actions made me realize we still have a week to go. Went to burn another section started making the out side fire guard then for no reason at all down I went. Unhooked and crawled out used the rope to hitch and pulled out the Kelly. Hooked up again this time I'm thinking better be more careful and about a half mile away down I go again. Well this happened one more time before I went home. So unless I can find some dry land its looking like Monday to mid next week.
The other question of the week is how the hell are we farmers going to make any money this year with prices where they are. Not a single crop except lentils and early locked in peas has potential for more than break even.
But one thing is for certain all the suppliers think its a awesome time to be in the ag business. One seed rep for corn and soy was so excited about the coming year it was actually weird. Till I said I'm not doing no test plots unless its 40 acres plots not the bull shit 2 acres they were talking. Its a waste of time and I am done wasting my time.
Wow the Railways are back up to speed and the grain companies have finally got their shit together and are phoning for farmers to deliver. Ah its spring, winter was mild and is over, Seeding takes priority. What a system. A contract is good for one group its the grain company, not the farmers who sign them.
So the Friday crop report.
I only saw two farmers seeding from Melville to Regina earlier in the week. The one is the usual first out of the gate and the other is the guy who lost so many acres last year to hail and flooding I guess its not going to happen this year. Yesterday late a few rigs made the official I'm seeding in April round. One guy went out at dinner made one round then unhooked and went working with the deep tillage.
Basically were all finding its really to wet to go but we want to go so bad.
Lots of people are burning this year. Two large farms in our area should have all their cereal stubble black before seeding. We think we will burn 30% or more of our cereal stubble. Water pumping is on going with lots of new big pumps in area and a few water canons. Guys are fed up so trying every thing. Lots are starting to harrow yesterday.
Ground is still bellow 5 but a few more hot windy warm days like the last two would get us their fast.
2015 plant is hours away just hope the wheels don't fall off in May.
Please be safe out their its just a crop.
Happy Seeding to all from the east side.
