yea we've had about 2 " rain since halloween , less than a foot of snow all winter. I think some of you guys will get what you were hopin for .... we have lots subsoil moisture but that won't grow you a crop when 30 degrees and a wind comes . looks a lot like 02. here only thing is we spent 3 times the inputs and almost same prices ??? and this is the northeast , we were wet also, brace yourselves leaches

Agree JD 100% - also we have never had that many hard freezes in a row in the middle of May - ever in our farming career here - at that most likely half of western Canada

So far perfect conditions for a clean healthy start.yes rain will need to come later but got some time before potential is damaged.as far as hay and pasture it has been shorted moisture at a critical time so yield potential is already going down fast.this may be because the frosts and not a bunch of soaker rains.

Krause here ,in sw sask land could be bought and paid for on agood lentil crop
And Canola ?? We're just trying to break even on the input costs. Lol
Reason it's grown is strictly rotational ,to break up possible lentil disease

Well you used to be able to buy land on a good lentil crop... But now that land is 2500/acre that's not possible

So v you and your whole family farm about what we farm I don't need irrigation and I to tell young farmers that it's a tough life where weather can **** up a good year so fast you can't even react in time! I don't sugar coat farming! But I don't live in NDP Alberta and I'm darn happy all our old guard will be moving your way to help out! It's farming weather effects every thing! Good day I'm seeding and this thread is just to say maybe just maybe the east side is back after 8 to 10 years of excess rain! Droughts suck but so do floods!

NE Alberta- finished seeding Wednesday. Last fields will not germinate without a rain. Nothing substantial in forecast until June. No grass growing for cattle. It's getting ugly fast. 26 already at noon and no humidity. It's not too late but we are in trouble here soon. Same pattern as last drought. Not good.

Fjlip noticed the same crustiness on the earlier planted fields. Catching one of them rains would be nice for some seeds in the dust. Wheat coming out ok. Some wild oats emerging in the wheat before the wheat. Blame it on harrowing

I will agree with JD and furrow on the cold temps -6,9 for the SW wasn't normal or all of west side for this time of year!

Conditions just getting really good here. NOT dry on top though, just moist and mellow, like the 75 years before 2006 were.

Looking good so far. Better than it has been here since 2004. I get what SF3 is saying in a lot of ways, but I know what some of you are saying as well.

The prairies are typically dryer than they are wet overall.

A 2002 or a 1988 would be very suitable for here. But it would not be for other areas, and I do not wish ill on anyone. But as SF3 has said, the last decade has been much more rainfall secure for typically dry areas.

Cycles come and go. For my farm, this "dry" trend is perfect. I hope we all get what we need for once.

Simmer down fellows. Whatever will be, will be!

Seabass, klause is accurate, in fact we seriously considered moving to that area 30 years ago. Land values were much higher , and we chickened out! Sorry, but too late now, klause got it all!

Anyone that thinks the Palliser Triangle is the traditional canola area must be inhaling too many Cruiser Maxx fumes.
