    Cardlock update

I went for fuel this morning and talked with an employee from a big farm. They are reseeding canola 10,000 acres. Naturally the conversation goes to the even bigger farming neighbors. Basically, talk on the street is between the "big six" farmers that everyone talks about around there are 66,000 acres that require reseeding.
Apparently, they are having some issues with local supply with canola seed.
The cereal crops did not experience as much damage.

Yes, there are not many mid size faremers in the area so everyone talks about the big farmers, which is logical .

Yep I agree its always the topic of conversation. But for our area WE lost the One earths and Broad Acres so we need a new Farm Hero!
Look closely on that canola and walk lots of fields as its June now and reseeded canola is now needing mid Sep to make it. Plant stand might be thin but once the weather smartens up that plant can do wonders with a thin stand.

These guys are excellent farmers. I have never seen a bad crop on any property for years.
I appreciate the insight on canola, but I am organic. When I see yellow flowers,(sweet clover) its time to pass the disk!
Disking down an nice green and yellow flowered crop really confused the kids when they were younger.

Cuz clover goes way down deep so you can mine nutrients the other crops can't reach to grow and sell with your next crop. One heck of an expensive nutrient mortgage to leave for your kids if they plan on farming.

Clover fixes more N than peas do. Very good for the soil and adds lots of organic material...

It's also aleoleic so it's a weed control method.

Hopefully the kids can continue your organic farm.

                  Saskfarmer,
I would like to point out that other farmers do have some experience too. There's a reason the canola is being reseeded.
We've all had those frosts your talking about where there's hope for a crop in the end. But in our area there's no hope on the fields being seeded again now.
Just try remember while you know lots and I'm assuming have a lot of experience also.... You aren't always the only one.

N is the easy one as you well know Klause. What about the phosphate or potash or sulfur?

Another reason why land is valued the way it is in the frost prone zones in Saskatchewan.

Seed too early and you will have May freezing and seed too late and you will freeze out in late August or early September.

In 2004 the -5C frost came early the morning of August 20th.

I believe you answered it yourself twenty. The clover brings it up. We can also benefit from a crop that roots Deeper. Take the grain off and the straw remains on surface. The nutrients are there cause we all know a crop that roots deep is going to have benefits over the same crop that does not get there.

Oliver that is why sometimes it's better to leave a damaged crop instead of replacing. Klause my neighbour not in hurry is planting yet for first time. hey do some of them varieties have replantung ins? If so then the suppliers better get the seed.
