    Friday Crop Report! on Thursday!

To all who hate me for writing about what farming is really like just realize I tell it like it is no sugar coating. Because in Canada weather is the determine factor not some machine, crop advisor, new seed, chem or fungicide that picks winners and losers. Mother nature in this country runs the show.
Now the Friday crop report for our area of Saskatchewan.
Seeding finished last night with the last drill to the north heading home. Only one left is the guy who seeded last year July 1st and then fertilized in August to not harvest a crop. The temps last week did cool and came close to freezing or just under for a short time as cloud cover came up. Moisture is still above in fields and the 1/2 inch rain this week was a nice top up on a spring that really went quite normal. To the south of the Valley a nice rain would be nice and to the north along 16 a nice rain would be nice.
Wheat is up and on its way spraying began yesterday all over the place we will be starting ours today. I would rate the wheat crop at a 9 out of 10 as last weeks cooler temps did slow crop progress but it is nice to see crops growing right up to the edge of water not dead a 100 ft out from excess moisture.
Canola has had a interesting week as early looks real good the late needed the shower after seeding to give it a good start. Odd field sprayed for flee beetles but nothing really and spraying is going to be going on canola next week when temps go up with Liberty. Most have their first app of Roundup on RR ready canola. You can see rows at 60mph from the road on a lot of fields.
I would give the canola a 8 out of 10 just because.
Barley is up the early came through the cold better than the stuff just poking out of the ground. The early is getting its incrop spray and the later will be late next week. I would give the early a 9 out of 10 and late a 8 out of 10.
Oats is just poking out as it was the last crop we seeded and most guys put in.
Peas wow is all I can say. Wow is the only word to describe our peas in this area. 10 out of 10. Their clean they germinated well and growing like a weed. First spray in crop was done yesterday. Funny when it doesn't rain every night or day how a pea crop can grow. Yes one huge rain can screw it up yet but for now Wow is the word of the day.
Flax is the crop that is doing very well and like I said all winter their is lots in our area. 9 out of 10 so far.
No lentils and not as many peas for our area. But with all the past years of moisture guys just didn't want to roll the dice.
Soy their is a little less than last year most is planted about a week to 10 days ago and is just coming out of the ground. Time will tell.
So again conditions with the 1/2 inch rain on Monday are good to excellent. Sub moisture is excellent but if a guy had to reseed anything shallow it would need a rain to get it going or would be patchy. Top is drying out. Water is dropping. The other day we went back and seeded 70 acres of Low area that was missed in seeding.
So maybe just maybe were back. Fingers are crossed as we move forward. A general rain would be welcome but not a 3 to 4 inch down pour. Pastures are ok but hay crop is not going to be great.

    Oh I forgot!
Be safe every one out their going hard reseeding. Its a very stressful time. To those who need a rain I hope you get your prayers answered bad weather is a killer.
But most of all remember its just a fricking crop. Family is more important.

Well that's good to hear that everything looks good. We should finish re seeding our canola today. We ended up re seeding 2/3rds. We able to have to put the drill a hair lower to hit moisture but at least it's in moisture. Wheat oats look ok but need a rain bad. No in crop spraying yet cause there nothing to spray. As a area we easily Re seeded 60% of the acres. Some guys gave up and are going to wheat instead.

Spraying RR canola, not a lot of weeds, 90% canola survived frost. Thin spots for sure, but a rain would perk it up. Really want a rain before spraying wheat, 3rd leaf 95% okay. Dusty sprayer ride. No reseeding that I know of in this area.

Had issues with my seeder that I never knew was happening until halfway through canola. One wing at the end was intermittently seeding about a 1/4 inch too shallow. Not noticeable when digging or visually watching, but now it is noticeable and it ticks me right off. About four feet at one end has very little germ from being too shallow. I hate to say, but I almost could use a rain for this error.

Other than that, the fields are VERY moist and in good shape. I am just a quarter inch from moisture in about 8 foot strips intermittently in half my canola. Dang nabbit. Not the year to make a mistake in ideal conditions! grrr.

Looking at a pillar for next year.

If you can notice a quarter inch seed depth I don't think getting a pillar is going to help.

I could not notice at seeding time is my point. Now, I can see it, because that 1/4 inch allowed the proper depth section to germ and grow, where the 1/4 inch shallower, is spotty.

A pillar or other independent drill, would not have these issues, at least if you had a foggy clue.

Point is, it is frustrating when I spend more time digging than seeding, and still get these issues, while my independent drill neighbors, sit in their tractor seats. lol

Their knees stay clean, their pants stay pressed. lol

Sometimes the points behind the tractor wheels are wore a bit more and have a harder time going in the tracks.

It actually has to do with the re-phasing cylinders. They went out of sync slightly.

I re phase the BG at every head land, always hoping hydraulics keep working and holding. One wing was TOO deep so needed adjusting this year. Carbide BG points seem to have no more wear behind tractor tires.

Or put depth stops on each ram like a concord. Even if a ram leaks it's resting against a solid stop

If going for a disk unit get a Salford 525 with front coulters. Those are slick.... and prob our next drill with a seed master cart

Yeah, I have stops as well on each cylinder, and re-phase often. Four brand new cylinders. JUNK.

A stop helps for too deep, but not much for too shallow!
