You are right cubin , but that's the problem - why does one need to do that ? You don't - again machinery companies and fert experts convinced some/ many they have too - that's complete b/s . A great crop can be grown year after year if conditions alow by many other ways far less costly - some guys need to open their eyes - mine were opened very wide after the last - longer drought, hail and frost event a dozen years ago.
Ya I may be blunt but it is what it is .
You are absolutely right Cubin but it is 95% self inflicted by both industry and individual farmers, that does not deserve a bail out , it is a correction that was far overdue on many levels that was going to happen sooner or later . Regardless it is not good short term but no way should a bail out try to cover the stupidity in Ag that has unfolded the past few years that put many in the situation you have stated.

500 of the big boys could get corrected and the effects would be mostly positive for the rest of us.

Banks, input dealers, grain cos and machinery companies would get their eyes opened about their own risk management.

But it won't happen. There may be several operations realigned but it won't be wholesale.

What would to poor machinery dealerships do without those multiple unit swap outs to displace competing brands. Or just the multiple unit trades so the operators can stay "current".

Furrow, explain the fert comment. We know we need it, is it how much and when or not all at once and only if it justifies it? When I hear how much some people apply, I think wow I could still ramp it up. We don't skimp (in my opinion) but I don't think we're excessive either. Wheat protein is usually on the higher side. My land has limitations, espcecially if moisture is a concern.

There will be many bigger farms that will be just fine because of proper risk management , but others big , small or inbetween may get slammed but like I said before there are many insurance options on the table that are available . Again it's been a two month drought not a multi year event - deal with it - many of is had to.
As for machinery companies - absolutely no love lost other than some of the great local individual dealerships that will sting for a few months - but they all had many great years in a row as many farmers did other than flood areas . So no way "AID " IMO at this point . A multi year drought maybe but there was virtually zero for the cowboys and BSE or washed out guys out east , so again right now deal with it or book Kramers or Richie's if you can't make ends meet after two months .

not gonna happen and should not happen.

the cost structure has gotten way out of hand. and needs a realignment.
a lot of it is our own fault.
                  and some the govt.s

i would sure hate to walk thru town
                  after a bail out

If you need an average crop every year to keep afloat you failed grade 6 math

Have to agree with the no aid side. Farming has never been better in the last several years, record yields, strong prices. If farms over spent, got greedy, too bad. Darwinism will evetually fix that problem. Dont ask the poor city bastards working 9-5, 5 days a week, 52 weeks per year earning 40k to bail out multi million dollar farms, and their spoiled brat kids. You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking that.

Fellas most average households today do not have any savings. Most are living pay check to pay check and have no money left over when all the payments and bills are paid at the end of the month. The majority of farms are the same, therefore there is a very short time frame which they can continue to operate when they encounter a reduction in cash inflow. I believe that government realizes this and will take action to prop up farms through this drought year in order to prevent a much larger problem from developing. Things have gone too far and unfortunately a minor reset will end up becoming an total economic nightmare for everyone if action is not taken.
Taxpayers are always left holding the bag. Look at FCC for example handing out money to anyone with two feet and a heart beat. When all the farms with debt with fcc start to default its the Canadian taxpayer to the rescue.

In my opinion the only place aid money may be needed is in the livestock industry. The cow calf guys in particular. I don't have cattle any more so I don't have a dog in the hunt but I have been there done that. The livestock guys have really received squat in the way of govt assistance, and when it's dry face some huge challenges with poor pasture and not enough winter feed. Not to mention Piss poor insurance options. I could be convinced on giving them a hand up.
