Have to agree with the no aid side. Farming has never been better in the last several years, record yields, strong prices. If farms over spent, got greedy, too bad. Darwinism will evetually fix that problem. Dont ask the poor city bastards working 9-5, 5 days a week, 52 weeks per year earning 40k to bail out multi million dollar farms, and their spoiled brat kids. You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking that.

Fellas most average households today do not have any savings. Most are living pay check to pay check and have no money left over when all the payments and bills are paid at the end of the month. The majority of farms are the same, therefore there is a very short time frame which they can continue to operate when they encounter a reduction in cash inflow. I believe that government realizes this and will take action to prop up farms through this drought year in order to prevent a much larger problem from developing. Things have gone too far and unfortunately a minor reset will end up becoming an total economic nightmare for everyone if action is not taken.
Taxpayers are always left holding the bag. Look at FCC for example handing out money to anyone with two feet and a heart beat. When all the farms with debt with fcc start to default its the Canadian taxpayer to the rescue.

In my opinion the only place aid money may be needed is in the livestock industry. The cow calf guys in particular. I don't have cattle any more so I don't have a dog in the hunt but I have been there done that. The livestock guys have really received squat in the way of govt assistance, and when it's dry face some huge challenges with poor pasture and not enough winter feed. Not to mention Piss poor insurance options. I could be convinced on giving them a hand up.

Its a fallacy that its the taxpayer to the rescue. Money is printed out of thin air backed by nothing, and then they collect interest on it. Taxes are there to create the illusion of legitamacy of the system. Did you know if you pay your income tax with cash it gets shredded upon reciept. The farmer will likely get bailed out we are the most important sector period. Or maybe Canada Pension plan will come in and buy up all the defaulted on land, essentially returning us to serfdom.

Interesting that Agristabilty was supposed to keep the wet guys afloat( pun intended) but is not expected to work in dry years.
I think it will be more responsive to the farmers with a sudden drop in income than it has been to the terminal condition of declining margins spread over the last soggy decade.

It's not in anybody's interest to kill the host. When Monsanto and the banks and everyone else stop getting paid aid will come.
The whole thing is one giant metaphor for why society is driving over a cliff.

I agree with LEP. The potential for a re alignment is in the making. It will not be a media frenzy but a more subtle correction. This happened in the late 80s where farmers went nutso when they saw a dollar of profit and overspent. many farmers gave in, they handed over the properties and went on to something else. Other farmers renegotiated their debts and continued farming. My neighbor went to FCC, negotiated to rent back the land form them for 6 years. 5 years he paid the rent and year 6 bought back the same land for half the original purchase price. Very clever. He always had new eauipment. He has since retired a millionaire. Todays big farms are high functioning operators, if they have presented the right documents to convince lenders to operate at this level, they will be able to negotiate write downs and continue to control the properties they have. These guys do not necessarily want to be "farmers" their end game is to be multi millionaires and they will do what is necessary to accomplish that.

After writing a response and then erasing it and writing a new one and erasing it over and over my answer is real simple.
NO.
Cowboys on feed yes something, Deferal or pasture finder or what ever we need that herd to stay where it is and grow. It usually adds to feed costs but feed will be the big problem.
Ag Stab will work if you harvest shit all. But a shower and 10 canola and 15 wheat will give you nothing.
Hail Hail and more and you might do really good.
Its Canada the toughest place in the world to grow a crop.
Mother nature controls more of your outcome than any thing at Farm Progress show has to offer.
Lots were sold a lie about this is the new normal with crops and our super varieties are able to take on anything. Crop advisors and specialists can tell you every thing on plant health growth and profit But.

Your exactly right hobby, it is a plan that has worked for many before and a few more will make it in the future.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Sorry Cuban, massive personal / farm debt is not a gov't or taxpayer liability - it is a personal problem that not every one has.

The election is on Oct 19/2015, anything is possible to buy votes. Harper wants to retain power. All those who have stated no to a bailout would that change how you would vote?
