Bucket I'm not implying that upgrading or investing in equipment isn't a bad thing.

Its more that some operators can't say no and feel the need to have new equipment across the whole farm

These are the guys that could be in big trouble if now their land debt is maxed out to fill the cash flow void

Boys we will get an acreage payment cause if we don't a lot more than farmers will be hurting. Governments are there to react to issues and offer up assistance in dealing with circumstances out of the control of those affected to ensure the fall out is contained and not allowed to impact entire economies. When 10-15000 acre farms start failing the boys and girls in Regina will respond!!!

I still disagree with you totally . There is crop ins , agri stand , agri invest and global Ag Risk in place now to cover short coverings . Bail out aid from tax payers is an embarsement at this time .
It will be their own mismanagement if things go sideways and they have overspent and are carrying far too much debt .

10 -15 thousand acre farms need to fail to bring back sanity to Farming. Land and other costs have risen too fast. Slow and steady is much more acceptable than boom and bust.

Drove 700 km this week in sask. Fat lady hasn't sung on this crop yet but she is clearing her throat. Aid? Not supposed to need that. We have a full suite of programs. Isn't that the kind of speak used? Just like every other program put in place over the years, the current crop of agthis agthat has been gutted right on schedule just when we may need it in a wide spread way. My opinion is they can close the dept of ag in this province just so I don't have to hear each week on radio about how OUR crop is doing. FM..

I like most of the responses here. When I first saw this post I was livid. Over extended multi-million dollar operations needing a minimum average crop to make it work, and now they want to be bailed out!! I've been through plenty of crap. Have stated before, many people on here have lines of equipment worth more than my whole farm, now they are going want a payout. If you have done all that, and crop insurance and other programs on the first drought doesn't save you. Survival of the fittest. Us with 25 year old equipment, and no equipment debt might finally have a chance to "shine" haha. Gov't payments right now would just reward a whole bunch of bad choices!

Also interesting to hear about all the cattle support. Many large cattle operations out there, could be lots of roughage around this year with these crops, otherwise, if they have to liquidate some of their herd this year at these prices...not all bad. Maybe a tax deferral, otherwise, not sure what else they need.

Bottom line is most farms are multi million dollar operations that if allowed to fail will come crashing down having a huge negative economic impact on many others. Most small farms ie. less than 6000 acres do not have a large enough impact so it really doesn't matter how many of them bite the dust. For the most part these small farms under 6000 acres are managed by conservative farmers who run older used equipment and do not over extend themselves. But there are many of farms that are significantly larger and carry a huge debt load and employ a lot of people. If this drought forces them into difficulty, which it will, the impact will be huge.
Do any of you small farmers (under 6000 acres in size) really think the little bit of business you do with any dealer whether inputs or machinery, makes much difference to them. If you stop buying so what. You might do a great job of managing and survive a downturn but you don't spend f all compared to the big boys. You don't feed the monster,the big guys who take big risks do and that is who needs to be protected by government intervention!!!

I guess so. Under 6000 a small farm. lololololol. Every one of my dozen young neighbors is a small farm, most of them half the size of the alleged, "small farm". lol

Maybe the "big farms" should take some pointers from us, mini-irrelevant-useless-loser farms.
